the 10x spike was is unethical…you don't even know if it filled the demand….you have no data to back that claim…for all we know the 10x fare actually resulted in a net loss for the company instead of simply having a smaller spike.
if the surge of 10x results in Uber ultimately losing money then they won't do it again.

It's ok to be mad or balk at paying it, but it's not unethical

it will probably be expensive. but have you tried to use a regular cab on gameday? Do those even exist? I'm not sure the point you are making honestly.

It's fine for normal use but it's not a serious alternative to the cab company yet.
when you move to DC, you'll find that it is very much a serious alternative to cabs

And DC is a town with GREAT public transportation

There are DC cabs, Lyft, bikeshares, and various other rideshares in the area

The competition is great and it's driving prices down like crazy

No

Posters have said numerous times on here how they can't wait to use the service on gameday...my point is I can't see that being a desireable trip for a uber driver.

when 200 people are trying to get an uber and there are like 10 drivers, I doubt they'll few it as anything but desirable

1 trip that could take an hour or 2? how does the driver get back to the stadium after one trip? I really think you haven't been around the campus to see the traffic if you think getting in and around campus is an easy thing to do.

yea and if surge pricing is in effect AND it takes that amount of time, the driver is going to make BANK

also its not just right after game time either. if surge pricing is still in effect anywhere from 12-2 they'll be making bank throughout the night.

You're not exactly on the clock as an Uber driver.

I think uber will be great for BR but I just don't see many drivers making themselves available around campus during peak traffic on gameday....time will tell i could be wrong

it's an expression

if you're sitting in traffic driving as an uberx driver, during surge pricing, you are making money with every passing minute

first off, the super bowl hotels are being paid by 95% corporate folks and not your fans…hence the reason for the unethical spike.

you still haven't explained how this is "unethical"

is there some sort of ethical justification to force non-corporate "fans" to go to the super bowl?

quote:

Uber is SO far ahead of the competition, they can piss off half their fan base and still have a billion dollar market. and the 10x spike was is unethical

people do not have to use Uber. your assumption is that this service is forced upon consumers. when you can show me the guns and army that Uber uses to force people to pay money they don't want to, then you will have a legit example of unethical behavior

quote:

hard to argue my point of 4-10x surge rate being ridiculous without the data to back it up

it's only ridiculous if you ignore the freedom of people to make their own choices. feel free to do so, but you look like an idiot doing that

The one point no one has brought up yet is the total cost of ownership UberX vs Taxi. Let's say 8 times you UberX it's cheaper than a cab, then twice it's 8x the fare. However, when you compare the cost of all taxis vs the cost of all Uber's, it's constant with Uber winning the battle of convenience. This argument to me lends itself a better viewpoint than simply being complacent with any surge price regardless.

people are free to individually make this analysis and use it to make their own choices

nobody is forgetting this or ignoring this. hell, that's my entire argument

if they don't, they're devoting personal resources to goals they prefer and paying for it via possibly less efficient uses of their money

that's life

i mean Uber is a great real world example of how price gouging hurts people who need scarce supplies

when the value of a good/service raises (due to scarcity from higher demand), we will devote more resources to moving that good/service into the area. the only argument against this is egalitarianism bullshite
