Words and phrases for the same thing that are different in different places?

Thought about this when I walked outside this morning and saw a "mosquito hawk" and realized how in many (most?) places it is called a "dragon fly".
And of course the old "soft drink" "cold drink" "pop" thing is pretty well known.
What are some of your favorite phrases or words that are different in different parts of the country or even of the state?

I thought mosquito hawks were those leggy flying things that are on the wall by lights.
Yep. They are. Here's one.

if I'm picturing what you are describing correctly I think those are called "blind mosquitoes" here. Or maybe daddy longlegs if I'm thinking of something else.

those are just spiders. no wings.
And I've never heard of a mosquito hawk

No daddy long legs are those disgusting long legged spiders with itty bitty bodies.
Once my weird potentially serial killer cousin ripped all the legs off one of them. It made me want to throw up....just a little orange disk.

That's definitely one. The whole perch / brem / panfish, etc. things probably have more names than just about anything.
Oh, and on mosquito hawks - I did a google image search on it and it seemed to show both insects. (As well as some mildly disturbing images which is why I don't think I'll put up a link )

Yeah one of my supervisors here in texas kept talking to me about going "crappie" fishing. I finally asked WTF is a crappie and he showed me a pic. I said "ohhhhh sac-a-lait" then he said "a sack of what?"

New Orleans has a bunch of these, they call a median the neutral ground, inspection stickers are brake tags, rollie pollies are doodle bugs, plus the whole sno-ball/sno-cone thing.

I've called dragon flies this since I was a small child.
Daddy long legs are in the same family as spiders but aren't technically a spider. This might be bullshite but I think I heard once that if they could bite they are 10X's more poisonous than a black widow.
We also would call hog nosed snakes a spreadin' adder. Never heard that term used outside of my hometown.

We always called it a brem bed but the only individual fish we called a brem was a Chincapin(sp) everything else was a blue gill or a sunperch. All that shite is probably arse backwards though.

Yep that along with lightning bug/firefly are both greatly debated on here haha. It's just weird to me bc I have never once in 28 years heard anyone call a dragonfly a mosquito hawk or a mosquito hawk a DLL etc...but apparently a strong contingent of posters have.

I've never heard of a dragon fly called anything but a dragon fly.

Dolly/hand truck. My old boss in high school told me to go get the hand truck and I had no clue what he wanted.
