She was a stray that happened to run onto our land with a big pack of dogs. She was the only one that didn't run off after my mom shooed the rest of them off and she proceeded to lay in front of my car and stop me from leaving for work.

The vet said she looked to be about one when we found her (with a rope tied so right around her neck that we had to cut it off and sores all over her body) so she's about 10 now.

You might want to try though. Holding her and petting on her as she passes might be very comforting to her and you.

When we had to put ours down, I held her the entire time, and while difficult, I knew my loving on her was the last thing she would see.

Those of us who have had to do this to our best pal know exactly how you feel. My heartfelt condolences to you.

I'm in shock right now.

Last year when I had to put down my dog, I decided to be with her as it happened.

I held her, made sure she was comfortable, spoke gently and rubbed her back as she went to sleep for the last time.

I'm really glad I did this.

Sorry to hear that. Our dog at home has been having issues. She is on a muscle relaxer/steroid regiment now and I'm worried when she comes off the steroids that she won't be able to walk well.

Good luck to you...it's a shitty feeling

Went through this a year ago. I can't say anything that will make you feel better, but I can tell you it gets easier over time.

My wife and I were discussing getting a puppy when our new house is built but I don't think I can go through this again.

I've put one dog down, and while it was incredibly difficult to steel myself to go in there and watch it happen, the fact that he died while I was petting him is something that I know he appreciated.

It may not be possible, but taking a day or a morning off to go be with her will be more than worth it, for both of you.

I had to do the same thing a few months ago with my boxer.

I suggest speaking with your vet and getting specifics about how it will be done. Make sure he sedates the dog.

If you choose to be in the room, prepare yourself. I did and my experience with my boxer was horrible. I've had nightmares about it. I can't stress enough to ask for specifics (even where he will inject--don't let them do it in the chest).

Sorry to hear. I know firsthand how emotionally attached people become with dogs. It's a hard thing to do, but better than the dog living with pain. Good luck.

my experience was smooth and painless.

I can't imagine if the dog was in pain while being there. I've heard horror stories where they make one last yelp in pain, and then go. That would kill me.

So sorry

My first real dog in life died on my daughters birthday June 18th. Horrible, only 6.5 years old. Just laid down and died.

Never realized a dog dying could be so life changing

It sucks, no not her way around it. My rot mix died on us a few weeks ago. I didn't make it home before he went. I sort of appreciated that he went on his own so we didn't have to make that call, but it's an awful thing to lose a long time pet. Our other dog still hasn't gotten back to normal.

Sorry to hear. I just lost mine of 12 years suddenly last week.

Just keep reminding yourself of all the good you brought to her, and what her life would have been like if you hadn't taken care of her. She looks like a really sweet dog.
