I know this sounds remarkably hokey and cheesy, but your dog will really appreciate your being there. Your thread has stirred very strong emotions in those of us who've been where you are now. We'll be thinking of you today.

Good luck - and again, hold her till the end and cry like a man.

This is what I'm most afraid of with my current dogs. I have an 11 year old rescue who we got at 16 weeks and a 9 year old American Bulldog. We got the Am Bulldog because my rescue was very timid around people, and once she got a buddy, she totally opened up. The Am Bulldog is slowing down, and I don't know what his passing is going to do to my other one. Hopefully, that's a year or two away.

When our girl died, her brother was healthy it seemed by all accounts. After he realized she was not coming back home, he got despondent. He stopped eating and we had him to the vet multiple times. He would eat one day and not the next. Vet couldn't find anything wrong with him.
He died in our garage 7 weeks after his sister. Never found anything wrong with him.

May I also suggest you have them cremated. Having to dig that hole in the backyard was worse than the drive to the vet.

I did this. Got a stone with my dog's names on it, and planted a tree in my backyard. Buried the cremated remains under the tree, with the stone on top.

I've had to put 2 dogs down. Never gets easier. Sorry about your dog.

They are better than humans. The more you are around them the more you realize how amazing Dogs are.

We just got done at the vet's office.

Heidi went easy and was surrounded by people who loved her. We cleared out the vet's complimentary treat jar by doing one of her favorite past times; throwing treats in the air and her catching then mid-air.

It was sad to see her mind still sharp as a tack but her body failing her.

I know we give each other a lot of crap on this forum but I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words and support; I stayed with her till the end and it was peaceful.

I will say the fake sympathy from the vet wasn't appreciated. Just come in and do it then leave us be. Also, the receptionist asking if we wanted to pay now or after was kind of cold.

Very sorry to hear abiut your dog. The timing is awful, but there really isn't a good time to say goodbye. Please don't let her suffer.

Just saw your last post. Sounds like you did the right thing. Hang in there. You'll be alright, but it'll take time.

Sorry man. Realize that she will be in a better place. I'm in the same boat right now. My dog ate a ton of sand and had to get it removed from her intestines. Unfortunately the sutures didn't hold and bacteria/blood/crap poured all into her stomach for a couple days. They had to do the surgery again Monday but they say it will be a miracle if she makes it. She is only 5 though so it really sucks.

Sorry for your loss man, but I'm glad you were there at the end. Dogs are great. I have two right now, but miss the ones I have lost all the time.

I've put 2 down over the years and about a year after each one we got another puppy. Each time I said I wouldn't get another but to no end I gave another that is almost 2 years old. Just love having an animal that loves you back unconditionally.

Absolutely, and as tough as it is to lose them, knowing you had a friend for many years makes for great memories.

Went through this with our pet turtle mr frodo last week.
Just now can get around to talking about it.

Kids are still all f 'd up over it.
We buried it in the sand box.
Neighbors dog or maybe a coyote dug it up and ate half of it , left the shell.
We were all in shock next day when we found it.

All I can tell you is time and the pound or a pet store can heal these wounds.
Stay strong.

It will suck for some time, but cherish that you got to say goodbye. The first dog my wife and I owned got away from my grandpa on a walk last year and got hit by a car. Was one the worst feelings I had turning the corner and seeing him lifeless.

You made the right call being there. When I had to put our dog down a few years ago I was there and petting him as he faded peacefully. It was hard but comforting to be there for him.

And as someone said above, just take comfort in the fact that you provided her with a good home and love for those years. For mine, he was found as a small puppy starving on the porch of an abandoned building next to one I was working in. So I took him and it was good knowing we gave him a great life.

My last dog got hit by a car, luckily he survived or I would never have been able to forgive myself.

There isn't a more peaceful way to go out than letting your dog go to sleep at the vet.

And of course, cure your sadness by getting another dog
