The wedding scene could have been pared down by an hour or so
If this movie was made any time in the past 15 years or so, they probably do cut that wedding scene down a lot. Its probably 15 minutes tops, filled with a ton of exposition, and I don't think the film would've worked as well.

That long arse wedding scene explained exactly where all of these characters stood with each other, and their relationships together in a way that I don't think you'd get if you had a 10 minute exposition-fest where each character got 3 minutes to fill the audience in on who they were in relation to the rest of the group.

one of the most overrated movies of all time

it lives off of one brilliant scene (the Russian roulette scene)

Leaving the mill to go to war..

Sitting at the bar dancing and playing pool early in the morning..

And we still have even discussed the greatness of John Cazale.

This movie is in my top 10 easily

What does the board have to say about The Deer Hunter?

Great movie.

Not in my personal Top 10, but definitely one of overall best films I have seen.

I tend to agree with this. The movie is so up and down, then fast, then slow...it's just all over the place.

In my top 20 -- Michael Cimino liked to overindulge -- way overboard in Heaven's Gate -- thought a lot more good stuff would have come from Cimino after this.
