Definitely go to Cafe Equator.

Food is delicious, especially the Panang Curry.

My only complaints are:

1) almost no parking
2) prices are higher than what they should be

Regardless, it's stil the best Thai in the NOLA area.

Just curious, what do you usually order at LA Thai? I've been a fan of Merlin and his mother since they were at Bangkok Cuisine on Carrollton back in the 90s, next to Rock and Bowl. I always get the same things, but I'm always interested in something new.

I really miss Bangkok Cuisine on Tulane and Carrollton- that was my go-to Thai place before Katrina. Heck, we'd even walk there for lunch when I was in high school.

That's the people who are now at LA Thai -- Merlin, his sister, and mother. Same dishes, too.

I've had these before and I've been to La Thai 5 times:

-Mussels app: very good--a must order
-Shu-mai: very good

-Chicken Pad Thai: decent/what you'd expect
-Red Curry with Chicken: a must order
-Red Hot Chili Pepper Curry with Chicken: good but not as good as the regular Red Curry
-Crab Three-Ways: delicious, but a little on the rich side

Drinks:
-Lyceetini--delicious and refreshing
-Strawberry Basil Margarita--delicious but $12 price is steep
-Bottle of Crios Malbec

When I've been to La Thai I've always been full once I'm done eating my entree that I've had to pass on dessert. Their portions are pretty big.

The parking at Cafe Equator does suck but I can usually find a spot in their back parking lot or park alongside it. I like the atmosphere and how it's pretty cozy in there and laid back. Usually just couples eating there and the right amount of people--not packed out but not so quiet that you can hear a pin drop.

It's amazing to me how people will wait 2+ hours for a table at PF Chang's yet won't go walk right into Cafe Equator and enjoy a better product for the same (if not cheaper) price.

Cafe Equator is standard but I've never had a bad meal there. Better than Siamese Thai or Banana Blossom IMO. I usually go with standard drunken noodles fwiw

maybe I just picked the wrong curry.

IDK.

I wanted it spicier than it was.
Plus service was pretty bad. There seemed to only be one waitress. She took our drink, app and entree orders, then didn't see her again until she was picking up the plates.

The golden egg rolls were good, it wasn't bad at all actually. Just not something I would want to seek out to try again.

FWIW Napoleon, order the Countryside Authentic Thai Red Curry with Chicken. I'm not crazy about Green curry but Red Thai Curry is great. It's good at La Thai as well but more Creole fusion-y and not as authentic tasting.

that's what I was going to get. I should have got that.

Check out La Thai before you go back to Equator. Thai Red Curry is great at both places. La Thai is more fusion than authentic but it's always delicious when I go.

The lava beef at cafe equator is delicious. Napoleon, you should give that a shot. It's a red curry and is spicy in a good way.

I really want to like La Thai because it's so close. But we've been twice (although that it's been years), and it seemed many of the dishes were on the sticky sweet side. Maybe we should have stuck to more traditional ordering. I seem to recall we tried the specials. I really enjoyed Bangkok Cuisine when Merlin and family had that place.

What's the story with Bangkok Thai next to Cooters? I've never tried that one.

Never eaten there. But I've had one person tell me it awful and another say it was surprisingly good. I've debated giving it a shot.

Yeah, stick to the traditional Thai items. Or drive to Metry and go to Cafe Equator.

At LA Thai, I love Mama's hot and sour soup, the pad thai, crab three-way... they used to have an appetizer platter when they were at Bangkok Cuisine that was great, too.

Went once for lunch. Wasn't bad but wasn't good either. I haven't been to any Thai place in the area that made me want to make a second trip.
