He is either a manager or he isn't, the same with you. Deal with it a and clearly outline your expectations of his treatment of his direct reports. Also understand his guys may just be bitching to bitch, it happens.

I would speak to him about it privately....never in front of the people he manages.

Set him up in a situation where you can talk down to him in front of his subordinates. Over the next few weeks, keep stopping by to "check on things" randomly

Just because someone is good at the doing what the business does, managing those doing that work is a whole different set of skills.

Management skills can be learned but when you're dealing with an unconscious incompetent, they don't even realize what they don't know.

Good managers always ask the OT how to do their job.

This.

If you're serious about keeping him in his position, don't have this conversation in front of his subordinates. You don't want them losing more respect for him by reprimanding him in public.

We just had a guy get "knocked down a peg" at our office. He's a shitty employee, but not quite bad enough to fire, so they have moved him to several positions to find a place that he'll fit. The latest is somewhere that he is in charge of keeping track of our field employee's training and turning in their hours. He's a nazi about it and they all hate him. He's apparently been talking down to them and bitching them out. I got to overhear upper management tearing him a new one about how he can't treat people the way he does. He's on this power trip because he thinks he's above them, but what he doesn't realize is the people he "manages" are more important to the company than himself. It was very grattifying to hear him get told something.

He sounds like a good worker, not a good manager. Keep him away from supervising anyone.

How does one go about knocking him down a peg? Not talking about demoting him, just sorta saying "hey, tighten the frick up"....

I've never been in that line of work, but if I was promoted in my field, then threatened with going back into the bullpen with the entry-level analysts... I'd shape the frick up. Nobody ever wants to go back to a position they worked themselves out of.

Be firm, honest and fair.

Hardly anyone goes from worker-bee to manager overnight without a learning curve. The guy should be given a chance to learn from his mistakes. If this becomes a trend, then yea... he may not be cut out for it.

Someone should knock you down a peg if you can't man up and do your job.
