The vast majority will disagree but this is my opinion. Get your retirement/savings/emergency accounts in order and then don't worry about saving a nickle here or a dime here. Saving a a few grand over a year or two does not matter in the long run. You get much more utility from spending it and enjoying life in your twenties. I know the majority will disagree with me, but if you believe you have a lot of earning potential in the future even 5-10k won't matter that much when you're 40.

I agree with this. Obviously get your finances straight and make sure a large % of your paycheck is never even seen. Once you're comfortable with how much is going into investments, don't worry about being stingy on every little thing day-to-day. Have some fun and enjoy life. This hinges a bit on how much you're making of course, but assuming you're not dirt poor, take advantage of being young.

Also, don't waste money on a nice apt. Find some roommates and you can easily live in a good place for $500-$700 a month in Atlanta. Compare that to spending $1000 if you live alone and it's a no brainer.

Oh, and to everyone taking jabs at Atlanta, you have no idea what you're talking about. It's a fantastic place to be fresh out of college.

Some additional advice for living in Atlanta:

- Everyone is going to tell you to live in Buckhead because that is where ex-SEC fratdaddies and sorority girls go to continue living out their college days. It's a good area to live, but please realize there are other in-town neighborhoods worth checking out(e.g. VA Highlands, Midtown, West Midtown, Inman Park, Old 4th Ward). At the very least, get out of the Buckhead bubble and explore every once in a while. There's a ton of cool spots around town.

- MARTA is your friend. Don't be afraid to use it.

- Don't live OTP

- Drinks are no longer college town priced. A $25 night out in Oxford can turn into a $100 night out in Atlanta. Pregame and find drink specials.

- People drive like assholes. Get used to it or become one yourself.

I agree with this.

Pay yourself first (i.e. save a reasonable amount, and don't just park it in the bank), but have some fun too. You only go around once, so don't be afraid to have confidence in your future earnings potential and spend some money now.

Best advice your gonna get if you want to save money. Don't get married young. Don't have kids young. One of these days you will probably do both and you will look back and think... "Damn that dude on tigerdroppings was right. I have no money now and my wife spends crazy amts of money on stuff that should not cost crazy amounts of money, glad I didnt get married 10 years ago...." O and start your 401k the first day they will let you and put the most in that they will match.

I would live in a place that is convenient to get to and from work above anything else.

Terrible advice IMHO. If you are doing better than most starting out enjoy the hell out of it. Run up a bar tab every now and then and treat an OT 7 to a nice dinner if she bangs like a puma. Just dont make it a weekly routine and you will be fine. Hard to network if you are a cheap arse

I bought a new car. Don't regret it. I lived alone, don't regret it. My advice, save the right amount of money within reason (emergency, 401k, etc.). And then have fun.

ah, that's a bit of a haul but it's a reverse commute so traffic, while not great, won't be terrible. Buckhead might be your best bet in terms of still living in town but also having easy access to 400 for your commute.

Sticking to a budget does not necessarily equal being a tight arse, but I understand (and agree) with what you're getting at
