I'm considering getting into hockey, help me pick a team

I have never given a second's thought to hockey. This weekend though I was hanging out with a Penguins fan and I was pretty baked and watching that 2OT game I was really into it. Had a good time. So I'm thinking I might want to support a team and start following the sport. I know practically NOTHING at all, so I want some guidance on who to pull for. I'm not asking you to pick out a team for me necessarily, just give me some info. Here's my criteria:
-Can't be too good. I don't want to be a frontrunner/bandwagoner/etc. So it can't be like the best team in teh league
-Ideally, would have something of a good history.
-Has potential to be good in the near future and/or has a star player
-Nice color scheme/cool city.
I ran down the list of teams with my friend and was at first smitten with the blackhawks. I was told they're pretty badass though so I guess that rules them out. San Jose also looked appealing, so they are in consideration. After a little more research, I kinda like Colorado too. Any other helpful suggestions that might fit the criteria?

I always liked the Penguins (Mario) and The Avalanche because of Ray Bourque, Peter Forsberg, Patrick Roy

Why didn't you support the team you had

Red wings.

23 straight playoffs. Generally one of the more successful franchises in sports, not just hockey. They also had some pretty shitty times (e.g., Dead Wings)

Pavel Datsyuk is a tremendous talent.

Red/White are basic, but the winged wheel is an awesome logo. The red fits in with UGA as well

Never been a big hockey fan, but I went to a Chicago Blackhawks game back in October and had the time of my life. From the singing of the national anthem to the eruption when they score was all amazing. Great fans, great arena with alot of history. So for that reason I root for the Blackhawks.
I'm going to try and get tickets for the match on Wednesday night. They're in the playoffs.

I HATED the Avs back in the 90s, but I respected Forsberg as Sakic a lot. I hated Roy, but I like him now as a coach

only used the Avalanche when playing this game

Pick one that you live near so you can go see them live.
I moved away from Pittsburgh but I can see them when they come to Tampa but I'd LOVE to go see 10+ games a year.

Anybody but the Toronto maple Leafs, that godamned team will break a muthafrickas heart over and over again

Anyone but the Blackhawks. They have enough bandwagon fans from their own city, they don't need anymore. Plus they're dirty, and their captain is a whiner.
If you couldn't tell, I am a Wings fan. I'd say us, for we aren't the powerhouse we were 10 years ago, but still consistently good. All the history you could want, Detroit, and some of the best players to watch.

-I have never had an interest in teh sport. I somewhat have an interest now.
-I did go to a few thrashers games, and when I was a kid I went to a few Knights games as well
-Me going to a few more games wouldn't save the franchise.

Dallas Stars fills every one of those criteria...except the cool city one.
But:
-8th seed in this years playoffs and first time in playoffs since '08. So they are decent, but not too great right now. Currently Playing the Ducks (top seed in Western Conference this season) in the playoffs. Ducks lead series 2-1.
-Conference Finals in '08. Stanley Cup champs in '99. Great history as the Minnesota North Stars. Also just retired Mike Modano - the greatest American born scorer in NHL's history.
-Top line has three guys age 24 or younger and all are signed to multiple year deals. That includes two current star players in Jamie Benn & Tyler Seguin (although both are really breaking out this season) and future star player, 19 year old Val Nitchushkin. Also have a goalie, Kari Lehtonen, who is very good. When he is on, he is downright incredible (like last night's 3-0 shutout). Again: in the playoffs this season for the first time in 5-6 years, this top line will be great for years to come, and the team will only get better in the next few years as they develop roster depth. They also have Antoinne Roussel (spelling?): 200-plus penalty minutes, will fight anyone, the kind of player everyone hates unless he is on your team.
-New uniforms this season look pretty damn great (Green & Black). They look more traditional - closer to their North Star roots & first couple of years in Dallas.
-Cool City...umm, no. Its Dallas. Negative - like all Dallas teams other than the Cowboys, the fanbase sucks unless the team is in contention year after year. It's unfortunate too because when the AA Center is at full capacity, it's rocking from start to finish. Attendance picked up late this season with the playoff rush, so hopefully the late push carries its momentum with the fans into next season.
Also, many believe the Stars are on the short list of teams to relocate. NHL wants a team in Seattle & another Canadian team. There are 5 or 6 teams always mentioned on this list to move with the Stars being one. But, if you don't live in Texas to go to games in person & will be jumping on a team in a different state anyways, what difference does it matter if they relocate to you?

Columbus.
Youngest team in the league and will continue to improve year after year. Also having a budding superstar in Ryan Johansen. The best part is they play their asses off. Not the most skilled team in the league, but they will hit you all game long and play their hearts out.
eta. They really don't fit your history requirement though

I considered them, and I like that they're an original 6 (research!) but they almost seem like the alabama football of hockey. Been around forever, shite ton of titles. I'd almost prefer a more "normal" team.

You can't ask someone who to root for. Watch some games and see who you like.
