That is pretty nice.
I'm using it to rent a place in downtown Barcelona for $100 a night. Also looking to use it to rent a house on South Beach for a bachelor party, as it would come out to around $100 a person for the weekend. Also found some cool places in Thailand, its fun to play with because the site is well designed and visual.

The only reason I doubt this is true is because almost every AirBnB bad case situation is publicized extensively. We've had a few posts on it in the last few weeks already.
But that would really be a shite situation and something to look into if you are the person renting it out. I'd like to know if it happened because that is pretty huge.

I would use Airbnb as a renter, but can't imagine renting out my residence unless it was a rental property.
It's a great idea, but there are too many potential problems. The only way I can see it really working is if the property owner is aware that his place is being sublet and if airbnb does a background check to a user. Even this would be cost prohibitive, IMO.

AirBnB DOES NOT background check, but I hate to break it to you...neither do most apartments and landlords.

I've made over $10k and scored Voodoo artist credentials all since November. I love doing it. I don't rent to anyone under 25. I've rented to mostly couples, small families and professionals, or older groups.

You sure. I'm not talking about credit checked. I'm talking about true background checks.
And background checks usually aren't done for short term rentals? Do you have people pulling your credit and arrest history to rent a beach condo for a week? No.

part of why i mentioned it - ive heard the story around town once or twice and im not sure if its true or just a myth from the anti-airbnb crowd.

I bought a duplex uptown just for this purpose. So far, it has been the smartest decision I can think of. I have vacation rental insurance so no worries there.
I have been doing it a little over a year and only one problem since (guests trashed the place for Mardi Gras) but airbnb issued me a $500 credit for the trouble.

According to the insurance agent, it is not a problem.
I explained that I did not have a business license and what I was using it for and they said that as long as I insured it for the correct purpose, it would be covered.
Then again, insurance agents are shady so who knows.
Airbnb does offer all hosts a 1,000,000 insurance guarantee and all of the horror stories I have read end up in airbnb covering the host.

interesting info on both fronts.
it still seems in the back of my head that its taking a pretty big risk that if you are partaking in illegal activity and the bill comes due the others may step away.
it might be worth checking into those stories and see if airbnb backed people that were doing it in cities where they technically were not allowed. (i dont care enough to research since im not renting to anyone)

not a big deal if it is a rental property...if this is where I live full time, I can't imagine letting complete strangers live there...

Every apartment I've rented (and I haven't rented in about a decade) did a background and credit check.
I'm very familiar with a few real estate firms who do property management, and all of them perform background checks.
In fact, no one who rents doesn't perform a background check because if the tenant doesn't pay the rent (or worse), the owner is screwed.

It's my full time residence. When I have renters, I just go stay with my boyfriend or a friend. I hate clutter, so I really don't have a lot of "stuff" that I'm worried about. I take with me the few valuables that I have. The most expensive thing that I have in my house when I leave is my All Clad pot set. LOL

I have my place in Denver rented out via AirBnB when I'm going to be in Europe and it is basically paying for my entire trip
