I just have a hard time paying $150 a head for that type of food/presentation. When you hit that level, I think most people want a certain style/atmosphere, like August. I like Root, but I'm just not looking to lay down those kind of bucks for this type of an experience.

Lot of people are saying that in this thread but I don't get it. This is not that atmosphere of "sitting at a bar". Have you ever been to a place like Brooklyn Fare that does this sort of thing? Totally different atmosphere and experience than what you are expecting. Very much an "experience".

That being said, I'm still not shelling out that kind of money any time soon.

When is the last time you've been to Root?

Too busy to mix it up today.

It's been about 8 months.

I'm not saying Root isn't good. I'm just not sure I want 10+ courses of their food. I'll happily go to Root for 4-5 courses and have wine and not go over $150/head. That's just a value choice for me.

If I am going into a meal with a starting out point of $150/ + drinks, I want to be wowed by something. Nothing at Root wows me.

Happy Tax Day

Exactly...and to be honest, there are a lot of restaurants I want to try in the city; for $150, I could easily go to 3 nice restaurants in Nola and spend $50/person at each. Would rather do that and have a great dining experience than have to sit next to 15 other strangers at a table and eat 16 courses. I could see going there maybe once in my lifetime, but not anytime soon due to the cost of it/all of that money in one sitting. And if I go with a friend or a date that's $300...definitely adds up, whether I'm paying or they're paying . And of course, it's all about what gives you your maximum utility/satisfaction/happiness in how you spend your money. For me, I'd rather go to 3 places; for others, they'll spend it all here. I just don't think any restaurant experience is worth that price tag for one person.

for sustainability, id point towards the max of 32 diners a night with two seatings of 16.

thats a mere 16 couples to be 100% sold out any given day. its not going to be a room that has to churn dozens of tables or 100+ people to break even.

Just noticed they have a website up.

SquareRoot
Not a great deal of info there but it does mention a $30/bottle corkage.

Yikes!

This caught my eye also.

We offer optional beverage pairings. Beverage pairings are billed per person the night you dine, plus tax and service charge. The Standard Wine pairing is $65 per person and the Reserve Wine pairing is $85 per person. We also offer a Non-Alcoholic beverage pairing for $25 per person and a Mixed Beverage pairing for $45 per person.

A family member of mine is going 4/24 so I hope to have some scoop to share.

Looking more and more like I won't be partaking in this "experience." Will have to rely on opinions from more wealthy folks to gamble their week's pay on this experiment.

Like I said before, I'd rather go to 2-3 nice restaurants in Nola and spend $50-75/person where I know the food will be good than go to Square Root for $150/person...

Just read through the website. Man, will be charged full price if you cancel a reservation within 72 hours of scheduled dining time. Almost get the feeling that they are riffing on the Soup Nazi.

Yeah, this feels like a Birthday/Special Occassion only type of place. That's why they will need to tap into the surrounding areas pretty hard. Plus, if the food isn't absolutely memorable, I would never think to eat there again.

The 72 hour rule is pretty harsh. I get 24 hours. But 72? Damn.

Too bad your "free lunch" ticket lives so far away.

Sq Root is having a "VIP" dinner on Tuesday. That was a conflict with a Galatoire's event so he had to push back to Thursday.

I doubt I'll be the first one there. Seems like a nice write-off opportunity for BO.
