Been meaning to ask my mom what the hell she was thinking when she rented Watership Down for me and my brother to watch as young kids.

Yep the TV movie was creepy to me. Maybe not scary like IT but creepy to where I won't watch it.
Return to Oz is also creepy as hell.
Has the clown industry ever recovered from IT?

The Jaws discussion makes me think re hard about never showing my kids that movie.
It's a classic but it changed everyone's view of the water forever.
I'm also not scared to admit that the 1st Paranormal Activity was amazing to me. I was shook up but in the most satisfyingly entertained way.

I think what people think of as the "scariest movie you've ever seen" has a lot to do with how old you were when you first saw that movie. Traditional horror movies will never really frighten me the same way because I have become somewhat jaded towards a lot of it.
Yup. For a long time the scariest movie ever to me was Silver Bullet. I used to HATE horror flicks when I was a kid. They freaked me out really bad. And one night we were at the house of some friends of my parents, and they all were watching it (even the other kids), and I was sitting on the couch terrified.
I still think about that movie every time I'm driving and see a field cloaked in a low, thick fog.
Now, as an adult who LOVES horror movies, I've seen it several times, and it's decent...but man if that didn't scare the frick out of me as a kid.

Pet Cemetary scared me the most growing up. The sister with spinal meningitis had me peeking from behind the couch

I saw the original When A Stranger Calls when I was 8 and I couldn't sleep for weeks after that.

The first 30 minutes or so is absolutely terrifying. But I think the sequel-- When A Stranger Calls Back-- from 1993's intro (the first 25 minutes) is even more frightening.

Exorcist as a kid, since Schindler's List, the horrors that humanity is capable of, plus a true story.

The final scene in Buffalo Bill's basement still sends chills down the spine.
