Engineers/Construction Workers?

Do yal find that the current crop of engineers and field workers lack common sense these days? I'm sure I was like that at the start as well, but lately this kids are driving me crazy.
Just today I'm calling up to site to see if a transformer has been installed. For a week I've been asking about it and people have been looking into reports about whether it's been progressed and when they couldn't find that they're looking at the cable reports because if the cables have been terminated then you can deduce that the transformer is installed and blah blah blah.
Finally today I had to borderline yell at this kid to just go to the fvcking spot and see if there's a transformer there or not. Is this the way all sites are now? Everyone just sitting behind computers?
Just curious.

who are you working with?

I ask because the only time I really had to deal with a young (my age ) turd at a site was on a desulfurization project and he was the son of the construction company's project manager. His dad wasn't all that great but he was a complete waste of space and "infallible".

I guarantee that if you were to hire me, that wouldn't happen.
Schools these days teach kids how to follow directions and color inside the lines. They are great at giving a set of parameters and letting them find the answer based on those parameters. However, if walls are thrown up in front of them, they often fail to see the larger picture on how to get around C in order to get from A to B. They require a lot of coaching at the start of their careers to get out of that one track mindset that has been drilled into their heads through their 17 years + of schooling.

Unfortunately, work ethic is not taught in school and it shows. I grew up working construction and it is by far the best thing I could have done.
When the heat gets put on some people they just fold. It is what it is.

The sad thing is, they think they are working really hard and have it bad and you don't understand what they are going though.

Most People in my graduating class do not even know what a bushing is, how a pump works or even what a gasket is much less how to install them

That's the thing. I don't think he's a total slapdick cause every time I talk to him he's freaking out and telling me how he checked this report and that database and crossreferenced with the Bible, and I'm thinking why the fvck are you doing all that?!?!
IT'S OUTSIDE! All that data bullshite is for Project Controls dorks.

I think degrees are basically being given out these days. I've met EEs who don't know what a circuit breaker is.

Know how I know you're getting old?

No its not be given out at all, its just all they teach is theory now a days because most professors have never been in the field. Mcneese had a bunch of good ones but many are retiring now and are being replaced by drs without their PE. Makes a big difference if a professor has worked in the field or not.
Because its all theory its harder for me.
