Zapps Beerfest Pro's/Con's

I see the Hogs for the Cause thread is getting reviews on what everyone thought of that festival. I thought we could discuss what everyone else's experiences was like at Zapps this weekend.
For me, I had an incredible time. I got out there around 2:30 and tailgated for an hour so I didn't have to fight traffic. I will do this again in the future. Was really fun.
I think they did a pretty good job of dropping hay in muddy areas. I didn't ruin my shoes or anything like that so I was impressed with the way they took care of the water.
They had some really good beers there this weekend. I think my most memorable beer I tried was from the Redstick Brewers homebrew tent. I forgot exactly what it was (I was pretty intoxicated by this point) but the Rosemary Beer was very refreshing and fresh tasting. Really like the idea of incorporating rosemary into beer.
I will say my biggest con this year was the lack of live music and they didn't let people into the festival early enough. I think last year you could walk in like 30 minutes early and just not get served. They tried to let everyone in like 15 minutes before start time and the lines were ridiculous. Not to mention they still need to get more bathrooms out there. I found a shed to pee behind for the most part but come on... You need more than a few port-o-potties with 2,000 drunk people.
The Pro's were obviously the great beer and the weather couldn't have been better. The setup was pretty good and I know they probably needed to move people around because the water. The Homebrew groups took the prize for me on best part of the festival.
Will make it next year for sure.

they didn't have live music? They always do!

They need more bathrooms, but other than that, it was a great day. It's one of my favorite events to attend in BR.

Wow that's a big con IMO. Inadequate amount of bathrooms at a beer Fest sounds bad.

Ill take the dj they had over some shitty cover bands that might drive the ticket prices up.

I dunno, we got there a little before 3pm and got in line. There were 3 lines and yea they were piling up fast but I was in the door with a beer in my hand before 3:30.

Im completely in agreement with you. How hard is it to get another 5-10 port-o-potties out there?
I think they did a good job on handling the sloppy grounds but they should really try to expand the festival area a little more.

The bathrooms were the worst thing, for sure. Way too few port-a-pots for the amount of people and drinking. It was muddy and I was expecting to see more people who fell in it, but the ground held up and people stayed upright.

The bathroom situation was so bad that apparently people found out the club had 2 bathrooms right out the back gate and were just helping themselves to our bathrooms. Some girl even threw up in the woman's one.

We had an officer show us where the lake was to go pee. I had a blast this year, even though it seemed like the amount of people increased three fold from last year.
I did miss the live band though. The first year I went, there was a zydeco band playing near where the Tin Roof and New Belgium tents were this year.

Bathrooms were a major problem. I stood in line for 32 minutes to use them. Pretty shitty when you only have 2.5 hours to be there. I agree that they need to figure out how to expand the grounds if they're going to sell more tickets.

That really sucks. Sounds like they definitely weren't prepared for the crowds this year.
I was told that after they sold out of the original 2,000 tickets early that the organizers added an additional 500 tickets.
I think 2,500 people is just too many for the space they use. Especially when it seems like 25-50% of that number are always crowded around the homebrewers tents.

I'll agree with you about the bathroom situation. You can't have too many port-a-pottys at something like this.
And I don't remember there being live music at the festival. This is the third time I've been to it -- skipped last year because of a wedding but went the two years prior to that.
I was also a little bummed that some of the local brewers didn't do anything special -- Parish, Abita and Nola just had out their normal selection of beers. It would have been cool if they had a preview of a new product. And I thought Crooked Letter Brewing was supposed to be there?
But these are minor complaints. It's a good event and something I enjoy every year.

At the present moment it is really difficult for breweries to bring anything new, since they technically have to sell it. Which means that it has to be a product that is available for sale (label approval, etc).
Crooked Letter had to back out a few weeks ago due to local commitments in MS.

Last year it was in the back .. they played on the "front porch" of one of the buildings.
Sorry to hear about the bathroom situation. That would have really sucked. At least some of you folks knew to just find some grass behind a building and go to town. Wish I could have made it .. I'm sure there were lots of great beers - I love when beer festivals include homebrewers. Hopefully next year Zapp's and Hogs won't be on the same weekend.

This could be a result of the new restrictions being imposed on beer festivals by the ATC.
In the past a brewery could simply brew something off the wall and serve it at Zapps.
Since breweries are no longer allowed to 'donate' beer to the festival, they have to brew something, sell it to a local distributor, pay the state their taxes, have the distributor sell it to Zapps at retail, and finally donate the same price of the keg back to Zapps.

This may be due to the new ATC restrictions... If Crooked Letter Brewing hasn't signed with a distributor in Baton Rouge I'm not sure they would be able to serve at Zapps.

But I thought Troy Hebert was supposed to be beer friendly? I cringe every time I hear someone say this.

it is a bit of a pain, but can be done as long as brewers and distributors can understand than presence at these festivals leads to increased sales and distributorship

Not enough port o potties, but i had a vendors pass. Slip out the back gate, find a bush and come back in. Worked several times.
