Yea the scene with the drug hooker let us see that part of him. They really want you to think he's the killer because he's so fricked up.

Anybody else notice the chief is the coke-sniffing accountant from Seinfeld?

I don't get this impression at all

This would be my guess Like maybe being around Marty's wife and kids is a release from his "torment" or something I just feel like Rust isn't really interested in sex
Eventually Rust is going to think Marty doesn't deserve his family because he's a cheating a-hole. So many ways they could handle the schism between these two.

He's the brilliant tortured soul like Hannibal, maybe not this particular killer but that he could snap at any moment.

i truly love the opening song,

I get the feeling she is a deeper person than Marty and that's what will bring her and Rust together, maybe not physically but emotionally. Tortured souls leaning on each other. It would not bother me if her and Rust hooking up was the reason for the fallout between him and Marty.
Same here. A lot of posters saying "Rust isn't interested in sex..." uhh that girl selling him the drugs was nasty and those women at the bunny farm looked like a bunch of meth heads. Michelle Monaghan is a million times better than the women he's interacted with so far. I tend to think that they had a connection in the first episode during the dinner. She knows what's up with Marty and I wouldn't be surprised if she starts connecting with Rust and then having sex with him.

Anybody getting the feeling that Rust was drunk or high and ran over his own kid in the driveway?

Fantastic episode, I really find it hard to believe people could not enjoy that but to each their own I guess

naw I got the impression the house was on a bend and the kid rolled into the street and a car couldn't react in time.

yeah I get the feeling that it was somehow Rust's fault
don't think he was drunk or high at the time of his kid's death because he said he started the drugs as a result of his kid's death

Not sure but there is definitely more to the story than what he's said so far.

The thing that bothers me about the opening is that it is so reminiscent of True Blood. Haven't really listened to the song itself, but the intro with the shots of South La. poverty, sex, drugs, religion, etc is very True Blood-esque. Obviously a nit-pick of a show that is amazing so far.
The only other thing I don't get is how the Chief says that MM is only there by the grace of Marty's reputation when it's clear that Marty doesn't like him and would like nothing better than to be rid of him? Why wouldn't Marty just say, "I can't work with this fricking guy," and then he's gone. Boom. No story.
To compare this show in substance to Treme or True Blood is a sin and I think the story transcends the setting, but I wonder how many people from outside of Louisiana are getting tired of south Louisiana swamp stuff. HBO needs its tax credits like anyone else, but damn.
Lastly, glassman, why you no like titties?

Marty knows that Rust is smarter than him and is the best detective for the job..?

I think some of y'all are going to need to accept that the real story is the characters themselves, and not so much the investigation
that's fine, i'm just saying the circumstances of the murder are very intriguing as well. I'm not criticizing the show, first 2 episodes have been great. and those breasts were perfect.

I think Marty actually likes Rust or if nothing else respects him as a detective... it is clear in the interviews he holds him in high regard

I wondered that when he was telling the story. I think it was him or his wife or maybe someone connected to his undercover narc stuff, though I haven't figured out if he was undercover at the time.

Well rust and Marty were partners for like 5 years so it'd have to be a long way down the road if that's the case. I think it's certainly possible that that happens but I just think it's cheap and don't want it to go down that road at all

in the first episode he said something to the extent of him being a damn fine detective.
