You don't necessarily just take a TD... There's 1:18 to go take a knee at the 1. First and goal get to run the clock out completely 3 shots at the end zone with a good running game and zero, chance FSU gets the ball back in regulation...

I don't understand why this isn't even considered in football ( dont misunderstand Im glad auburn choked). But numbers wise the chance of a TD on 1st and 1 after running off 30 seconds minimum is a lot greater than the chance of giving up a game losing TD w 1:20 to go and TOs

You are down. You can't just expect points.

The state of Alabama has proven they can't consistently score field goals.

And what if you have a fumble or a bad snap?

Agreed. But I fumbled on a QB sneak in NCAA for Xbox once after using this strategy, and I was furious.

And Auburn wasnt on the goal line when they scored. They were on the 37 yard line. And their kicker missed a 30+yard field goal earlier. Mason made a great run and got in the end zone. Then they went ahead by 4. Which meant FSU had to score a TD. Just so happens that they did.

I think its an old rule of thumb that you always take a TD whenever it presents itself - this was probably a very good rule 50 years ago when scoring was harder to come by - but I think this game in particular illustrates why its not always the best idea now. If Auburn had just kneeled at the 2 they could have burned off another 30 seconds - and then maybe more depending on how long they took to get into the endzone - and worse case you take an easy field goal to go into OT.

yeah, but there is no guarantee for a TD either. Play for a tie instead though? PUSSY shite!

especially this year. Nothing was safe.

I mean look at what happened in the iron bowl, HELLLLLLLOOOOOOOOO!

False start, holding call, turnover...

Ever seen a field goal missed, snap bobbled (Romo)...

Take the points when you get them.

Chewing the clock when losing is more risky than protecting a lead on defense with 1 minute.

You score when you can

Too much can go wrong for you not to take the points there imo

I said the same thing when it happened. The returned kickoff was a godsend because it gave them time to work. Their hurry up did use enough time. The needed to down the ball at the 1 and run the clock down.
