Go to crabby jacks for the fried chicken, it's the exact same chicken at a lower price

The deep fried stuffed flounder is excellent.

I really don't get the hate for this place. Is it worth the wait? If you have the time, sure. Are there better restaurants in the city? Of course, but that certainly doesn't make it a bad restaurant by any means. It's nice having a few drinks at The Maple Bar while you wait, then having a good meal with fun, loud, rambunctious atmosphere.

I enjoy it from time to time. The fried chicken came from Austin Leslie when he cooked there for awhile. Good chicken.

The fried grits will blow your mind if you've never had something like that.
And that only looks like half the menu...

My issue with the place is Sanitation. Went once and it smelled like a rat died behind the wall and you could smell the bathroom from 20 ft away. Went with a group one night and a roach crawled onto the table and onto one of our party's plate. When roaches are brave enough to do this, you have a pest problem.

This is large part of my criticism. It's not that the food is bad, but there are several places that that similar offerings that aren't inflated in price. Money is no object for me if the food is worth it, but believe me, the food prices at Jacque-Imo's are sort of silly.
Plus, there are perhaps two restaurants in the city where I'll willingly spend more than 15 minutes waiting for a table.
And the place's funkiness that was a good funky, has slowly slipped into a sort of shitty funky.
Of course, I can't remember the last time I ate there, so . . .
ETA: I think I'd grab a Ferdie from Mother's before waiting for a table at J's.
