I was on toolnavy.com and some of the posters there seem to think this as well. Or at least hope... I hope so but I don't think so.

I agree with Cdawg. I don't think that it's awful, but it's pretty mediocre. It's the first album they released where they didn't expand upon or progress (for lack of better term) their sound. Every album prior to Days was different than the one before it, but they seemed to just settle and stay where they were with Days no expansion.

Listen...if a band that I like puts out an overall shitty album, I'm not going to like that album just because it was created by a band that I have liked in the past. Overall, the album just isn't that great. I think over time you'll realize this. Some bands get better with time. Some bands plateau and disappear. Some bands actually succeed at putting out worse and worse material over time because people always hold out hope the next album with be the band's return to greatness. People start to believe, "Well, if this album is alright, then that means it's a success." Y'all start to settle for mediocrity.

CDawg,

I did make the above post and I own it 100 percent.

However, that does not describe 10,000 Days. 10,000 Days is an incredible album and includes Tool's very best song to date, Rosetta Stoned.

I'm not saying this because I'm a huge Tool fan who likes everything they put out...I don't.

I just completely disagree with 10,000 Days being Tool's weakest effort.

In fact, it's one of Tool's most complex efforts.

re: Lateralus

When I first listed to 10,000 Days, I was fairly disappointed. I listened to the entire album and felt that there was too much filler noise and not enough incredible songs.

Of course, Vicarious and Jambi were solid. No doubt. But the rest of the album seemed like unnecessary noise.

I spent a few months just listening to Vicarious, Jambi, and The Pot on repeat until I wore myself out. I put the album away and didn't listen to it for at least half a year. This is my normal habit when Tool releases a new album.

Then, one day I was driving from Springfield, MO to St. Louis, MO - a 3 1/2 hour trip. I scrolled thru my playlist and noticed Tool. I thought to myself, "I haven't listened to Tool for a while...I'm in a Tool sort of mood."

First I put on Opiate for some immediate rock agression. Those 6 songs flew by quickly, and I started to listen to Lateralus.

By that point, I got to the point where I hated knowing what song would come next, so I put the Tool playlist on shuffle.

The moment I put the playlist on shuffle, "Rosetta Stoned" began to play. It was like I was hearing an incredible Tool song for the first time! Super progressive, super strange, full blown testosterone driven...it was a magical moment for me. I'd never heard this song, or at least I never listened to it from beginning to end.

How did I miss "Rosetta Stoned" when I first bought 10,000 Days? I was convinced that when I first purchased the album, the "filler noise" between Jambi and The Pot so aggravated me that I failed to give the second half of the album proper attention.

This song was INCREDIBLE! I put "Rosetta Stoned" on repeat and listened to it the entire trip to St. Louis, with each listen it only got better.

By the time I arrived in St. Louis, I was convinced that 10,000 Days contained Tool's best work to date.

The filler noise was Tool's way to test their true fans. The filler noise was their way to troll sidewalk listeners and to reward the patient.

We can debate all day long which Tool album is the best. And everyone makes legit arguments for their choice because all of their albums are great.

I just can't take anyone serious when they claim that 10,000 Days is weak. The song "Rosetta Stoned" alone destroys most of their previous effort. It's in a completely different universe of awesome.

I've found that people who claim that 10,000 Days sucks haven't listened to all of the songs from beginning to end. I've also met many Tool fans who claimed the same thing, and then I played Rosetta Stoned and the song blew their minds...which confirmed my suspicions.

Well from everything Blair, their semi spokesman has said, it is going to be heavier than 10k

Nah, I'm not trying too hard. Just very passionate about my opinion..

If the new album is heavier than 10k (Rosetta Stoned in particular), then it's gonna be incredible! I can't even wrap my mind around what it could be like...

re: Lateralus

From what I've read, everyone except Maynard has been banging out songs just waiting for Maynard to come in and figure out the vocals. Danny said that is their normal procedure.

He also mentioned that they has a playlist of new songs but weren't happy with the music because no matter how much they have been trying to create a different more progressive sound, everything keeps sounding like Tool of old.

Danny said that they want to create some new and completely different, and if that's true, I applaud their effort to push the envelope instead of putting out more of the same just to make extra cash.

They want this next album to be insanely awesome. That makes me excited.

Until they figure out a new formula, Maynard will continue touring with Puscifer and perhaps working on new APC stuff.

And that too is awesome.

The song 10,000 Days (Wings For Marie Pt II) itself is the most lyrically wrenching one MJK has ever put words to.

Right In Two is spot on also.

Every Tool album from Aenima on has noise tracks. The 10,000 Days album is not lesser than any of the others. It fits perfectly in their catalog.

Sayre,

I like how you ignored everything else that came after the quote that you just posted.

I initially thought the album was full of unnecessary noise. Months later when I revisited the album, I found out that I was wrong.

Come on, bro...at least read what I posted after that comment.

Not my favorite Tool song. Forty Six & 2 is mine.

The lyrics seem like they were well thought out. Weird shite just isn't my thing, I like the music. The only song I can stomach by Tool is Stinkfist.

You're doing both and yet when other people express their opinions that differ from yours, you discount it and make that comment I quoted and start threads like, "I'm Starting to Question the Musical Tastes of Most Posters on this Board". That was the main purpose of my original post but it also happens to be a good description of 10,000 Days.
