Sad to hear this. There was a thread a couple of weeks ago saying Coach Dietzel was in very poor health. I never met the man which is my loss.

Is it true his teams at LSU always punted on third down just in case there was a bad snap and we would have another down to punt? I've had several people who went to games back then tell me that.

He did it sometimes I believe. Apparently, when Charley Mac took over, he did it more often, until he stopped doing so.

No. It is true that he would occasionally punt on third down when down and distance were such that it made some sense for the reason you cite, as well as the fact that substitution rules gave LSU a coverage advantage in some situations.

Death is always sad, especially when it's a great person. But at the age of 89 I hope those who were close to him are celebrating his amazing life and his character more than mourning his death.
RIP

Had lunch with him with my dad a few years ago. What a guy! Every topic he touched would fill a Ken Burns Documentary. Truly remarkable gentleman....another loss of our Greatest Generation.

I was glad I got to meet him before one of the LSU games a couple years ago. What a remarkable man.
