Well, finally got a chance to go to Galatoire's sunday night. It was not that great.

The wine they served us tasted very acidic and old. I asked the waitress if it was freshly opened, she said it was. I would think that they would open the bottle at the table, i was mistaken.

The turtle soup was very good. I can't complain about this. It tasted fantastic.

I ordered some fish topped with crabmeat and mushrooms. Have no clue what the fish was. Waitress did not tell us. I'm not big on mushrooms, and i was shocked at the mound of mushrooms on the plate. The dish was pretty bland.

Overall, i don't think i'll be going back to this place. Definitely not worth the price.

I cant imagine any restaurant in the world opening a wine by the glass at the table to pour. Its an order that goes to the bartender not the waiter grabbing a bottle from the cellar. You should have sent the wine back if it was bad.

and it said, grilled gulf fish. I didn't think about it until after i left, but they usually tell you what kind of fish it is.

The dish i got was

Gulf Crabmeat Yvonne

Sautéed Gulf fish topped with jumbo lump crabmeat,
artichoke hearts, mushrooms and green onions

And the wine i ordered, was one i've had before and i like. This one tasted like it was old. Like when you open a bottle of wine and forget about it, then go drink it 4-5 days later.

Maybe i'm mistaking last time i ordered wine. But yeah it was bad. I didn't feel like haggling over wine so i just accepted what they gave me.

gotta go to the one in New Orleans.

But if you live in BR, the dining options suck so bad what else can you do?

Ive seen wine pairings with specific dishes by the glass done at the table. That is a waiter or somm will bring by the bottle, display it, and pour it. I've never seen a by the glass order accompanied with a presentation of the bottle.

If the wine was bad and you are knowledgeable enough to know that the wine is bad, send that shite back. Nice restaurants won't think twice about it. I get that it's an uncomfortable thing to do just be polite about it.

if a coke was flat I wouldn't drink it...
if a beer is warm I wouldn't drink it...
etc etc.

When i ate there this dish was black drum. I didn't like it either. If the wine by the glass taste bad then that's the bartenders fault. They must not be sealing them up correctly at night or dating them correctly. In the end it all comes down to management finding people that are going to do things the right way , every day, instead of short cutting things. Then again, if management is too tight when it comes to profit margin, then that's not the kind of fine dining restaurant you want to eat at.

I have looked at their menu online, and wondered about "gulf fish" myself...

Croaker? Could be...

That's usually what you'll be getting when a menu just says "gulf fish." Puppy drum.

You can always ask. I've never had Galatoires in NO not tell me the type of fish they're serving without even having to ask, though. Typically, it will be at least 3-4 different offerings.

I dined there several months back and was not impressed. I really like the Highland location and had many a good meal there. It seems like they burned too many bridges when they fired the old staff en masse and without much notice. Word gets around I guess and they obviously have had difficulty hiring quality staff.

In regards to ordering by the glass wines, I always ask for a small pour before I order and have never had to send back a wine that I didn't like or was not handled properly.

I hope they get their act together soon, the BR dining scene desperately needs more fine dining options. Maybe with John Georges' recent aquisition of the Advocate, a good review is in order.
