i know that SEVERAL years ago someone won the gi tarpon rodeo with a tarpon caught in lake pont. also, there used to be a N.O. tarpon club, so there was enough around to generate general interest. i've talked to several "old timers" over the years and have heard stories of tarpon in the rigolets, lake borne, lake pont, etc. some of the splashes i've seen from time to time in these areas lead me to believe that there may be more of them around than what i thought. is there anyone on the ob that has tried to fish for tarpon in these areas? if so i'd like details.

I think the dude that weighed in the tarpon caught in Lake P was a fraud. The fish was caught in a trawl.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Isn't there an area that they sink the christmas trees in lake P thats good for tarpon... At least thats what I have heard.

There's also a damn in bayou black that holds small tarpon.

Don't know where that is.. but... they have been going to the same areas long before they were sinking christmas trees anywhere.

they very rarely go past the lakefront airport. In fact since MR go has been closed - have not gotten any reports of them near seabrook.

but have gotten many reports from other areas they frequent and actually more from prime zone...

Whats the correlation between coons and tarpon?

If this is some sort of metaphor, then disregard and I completely agree with your assesment and understood all along.

coon pop = very effective lure/hook setup. Before coon pops I think the hook up to landing ration was about 10-1 on tarpon... probably as good as 3-1 with it. Coon pop doesn't get any more or less strikes than other baits - the hook just stays in those bony mouths better.

actually wasn't it some divers from MS that found that "new" concentration - that gets here earlier than most tarpon do?

off main pass?

Coon pop is the nme of a lure designed by a guide by the same name. Both are awesome.

They get up in the lake. Not many people really fish them there and I'm sure it's not the same numbers they have out in the delta so you don't hear about it much.

I've fished them in bayou black, but never caught one. It's really neat watching the small tarpon roll in the little canals.

Coon pop was invented by Captain Coon. Really simple bait but it's all anyone uses now. If Tourane to catcha tarpon, get with Captain Coon.
