re: What is a restaurants obligation when you are unsatisfied by a dish?

If a meal was cooked properly, prepared well and properly served on time, but the guest simply disliked their choice, it is definitely NOT the restaurants fault and they shouldn't be asked to take it off the bill.
However, in today's social media world, that piss ant little punk customer is going to run them into the ground no matter what so the restaurant has to balance between not giving stuff away and maintaining a positive reputation. Catch 22, imho.

And many of those people make themselves look like idiots when critiquing, not knowing what in the hell they're talking about. You can't help ignorance, just expose it with facts.
I personally think Monjunis sauce is like eating cotton candy it's so absurdly sweet, but I would never ask that they comp it. For better or worse, it's their rendering of a dish, and I just won't go back, because that's how you vote. I may give my opinion of it on a website, like it was too sweet for my taste, or it's not really textbook sauce, or what i expect a bolegnese to taste like, but it IS their take on it, and at the end of the day, they live and die with it. Apparently there are plenty of people here who do like it, and so it is what it is.

If I was a manager I would first ask if anything was wrong with the dish to make sure it was prepared properly. If the customer "just didn't like it", I would comp the meal and give them a coupon so that they come back again and try something different.
The 10-20 bucks you lose on those meals is worth it for good reviews and possible loyal customers.

This is how I felt.
I think it was from the episode "Kitchen Mafia".
The girl ordered a pasta dish with fried calamari. She said she just didn't enjoy it, it was fine but not what she wanted. When I saw the two girls discussing, "I shouldn't have to pay for a dish I didn't like" I was truly saddened.
I don't wish to bring this into the poli board, but it was a total lack of accountability by this young lady.

No matter how bad the meal is, I never expect to be comped; I chose to eat there. However if I am comped I am glad and am more likely to return.

My question, do you feel entitled to not have to pay for a meal you didn't enjoy? I'm not sure I would expect a free meal because I didn't like my dish. I'm not talking about kitchen error, just not being satisfied with your own choice. It's one thing for the restaurant to offer to take it off the bill, but would you request it to be removed after the bill arrived?
if you order something and it is prepared correctly, but you dont like it, it is your fault that you didnt read the menu and understand what you were ordering.
if you dont like it because its cooked like shite thats a different story.
when i worked at rotolos we had a bunch of people send things back because they "didnt know" it had this item on it. well learn to read! we never comped those items, people never complained because they knew they were at fault

Typically I have only sent back dishes that were not heated properly or just cold. Gumbo seems to be a 50/50, about half the time it's barely room temp, I take one taste and ask that it be removed, not replaced. 100% of the time, if you ask it to be heated, they zap it for too long anf they bring you back a boiling cauldron of thick lava.
Cold fried items are inexcusable and usually the servers fault for letting it sit on the serving line.
if I order the wrong item, thats on me, not the restaurant. Most good places will see the problem and offer another dish, I rarely let them do this.
The last itme I send something back was a fried shrimp platter, most of the breading had fallen off the shrimp before it got to the table, it was just a big greasy sodden mess. I aksed the waitress, "can they do better than this mess?"
She said "the fried seafood is not coming out well, I think the new guy doesn't have the oil hot enough".
I ended up with broiled redfish.

So obviously fake

I agree P-man. Plus the host is boring and obnoxious with his put-on NY schtick.
regarding the OP
Interesting choice of the word "entitled" there / I think the type of degenerates that would send back a half-eaten meal simply because they decided they didn't like it and wish they'd have ordered something else, are the same type of low-rent individuals who expect handouts from anyone and everyone.

Only times I've ever had something comped was due to horrible service, and even then I've never requested it.

Should you pay double, if you are blown away by the meal, and it far exceeds the expectations you had going into dining at the place?

Sherman, that is when you are going to get the infamous microwaved steak without a doubt.

I did use that word for a reason as it captures the mentality of a person who doesn't accept responsibility for their own actions. The girls in question appeared to be college age or educated. They were polite, but when the bill came were "shocked" they weren't comped. Had the spoiled brat sound.
I agree about the show, the host is a clown and the premise is lame. I can't stand when he starts talking "New York'a"
"I wanna talk witt da twoa ya's." Yeah, you should take his advice.

Clearly your guests weren't black.

What if a big cockroach crawls on the table or on one of the guests.. and she screams bloody murder.. Should a meal be comped?
Posted on 5/20/13 at 2:06 pm to Oenophile Brah
If it were unedible I would complain.
If I just didn't like it I would chalk it up as lesson learned, don't order it again.

Why are service people so racist? My hyper-liberal niece worked as a waitress at a French Quarter restaurant as an undergrad, by the time she got to law school she sounded like the second coming of George Wallace.
