What is your preferred position for open carry on hip.

I haven't messed with the angle on my blackhawk serpa yet. Do you prefer muzzle forward or butt angled forward? I'm thinking about trying more grip forward.

I had mine grip forward, but I had to bend my elbow/wrist in an awkward position to get the gun out. Now I just run it straight up and down. I can lift and press the gun the quickest in that position.

I also prefer the paddle back to the belt mount..

I like the paddle also. Don't really notice it like the belt loops.

Grip forward so you can draw from a seated position.

Serpa holsters are prone to accidental discharge. A lot of LE agencies have banned them because of training accidents.

Be careful with those.

I feel obligated to link this video
TEX GREBNER - I JUST SHOT MYSELF!

"Kimber Pro Carry 2 1911 .45 ACP" that's a mouthful
"My training kicked in, and I called my mom"

Definitely train to keep your finger straight while drawing

While drawing. Or while holstered. Never heard of this.

I agree with this....

Some ranges have started banning serpa's for that reason. I prefer the Safariland ALS holsters with the thumb release.

Did you watch the video? It's very easy to push that release with the finger tip. When you draw like that, the index finger falls right into the trigger guard.

Wow. Thanks for posting that. His finger went right into the trigger guard when he drew.

Wearing a firearm daily at work, I have resisted going to the security holsters. I carry a Safariland pancake holster for my Glock 23. I've used that holster for the past 10 years.

My 1911 carry holster is a SERPA. I have found that my finger lands on the frame right above the trigger when I pull. I carry "cocked and locked" and have made it a habit to release gun, raise gun, drop safety with thumb, then put my finger on the trigger. Though I do that all pretty quickly, I find that it would be hard to accidentally fire. I grip mine with it seated deep in my hand, so I could see if someone holds it lower on the grip, their finger would land on the trigger.

He said he'd been practicing with a Safariland thumb release. When he switched to the Serpa, muscle memory took over and he clicked the safety off thinking he was hitting the thumb release.

IMO, he had the gun holstered, cocked, and the safety off.

If you carry concealed, there's really no reason for a retention device on a holster -- especially the kind on a Serpa.

I'm not familiar with the safari land. Is its release on the hip side, and do you have to push it rearward to release it?

Several thoughts come to mind after reading this thread....

1. Cant the gun so that the butt is forward. This is called an "FBI cant" and is used because it makes the draw faster. It is more natural to draw the gun up and forward out of the holster than it is to draw the gun up and backwards.

2. For those of you recommending the paddle holster...I recommend you watch THIS

3. I have a SERPA holster for several of my handguns and the button that releases the gun from the trigger is not in line with the trigger and trigger guard. If you press the button on the SERPA and draw without moving your finger, you will find that your trigger finger is straight down the side of the slide in line with the barrel.

4. When watching the slow mo of that video with guy who shot himself, it is very obvious that he drew, inserted his finger into the trigger guard and pulled the trigger. When practicing drawing, which you should always do with dry fire (I never have ammo in the room when I am dry firing.), you should practice keeping your finger off of the trigger until the gun is in the direction that you intend to shoot. Start by practicing the draw slowly and adding speed later. Add speed slowly as your ensure that your form is perfect and proper. (For those of you who know this already...great. It is intended for those who do not)

Happy and safe shooting yall

I am not a fan of serpa holsters. A few ranges, such as the fbi training center have banned them from the range. As well as a few notable trainers banning them from their classes. Here is a video demonstrating one of the issues with the serpa

I don't think the armadillos and possums will take my holster in the woods. But good to know if I ever open carry at the mall.

Riding around on the ranger I find the butt hits the seat behind me. I think the forward cant would help that also.

I use the Serpa for my XDM with the "FBI cant". Never had a problem with it like that. I use the belt loops because the paddle wasn't comfortable to me.

Try canting it and see if your draw improves. My old duty holster was straight up and down for years and I believe I could outdraw doc holiday with it. I have now gone to a canted duty holster and my draw has slowed considerably. I have practiced with it hundreds of times but I cannot seem to get used to it. I will be going back to a straight up and down holster soon. On another note the best shooter and fastest draw in my dept uses a canted holster. Use what works for you.
