Why doesn't the NFL want to expand into Germany rather than England?

The Germans took to NFL Europe and by the time it got shut down almost every franchise had been moved to that country and they enjoyed pretty solid attendance for what it was.

I understand the reasons for broadening your sport internationally, but why wouldn't you start with the European country that actually took to your game in the first place when you were offering them a minor league?

There's this book called the History of English Speaking Peoples.

(and German clubs only got behind the teams that had Germans on the squad...the big complaint over there - we want our football teams to be German.)

I guess that's fair but shite shouldn't we be playing a game there every other year or something just to keep their interest up?

This is my personal take that I don't base on any scientific facts.

The Germans took to American football because they do not have much of a rugby scene. There is much more interest in Germany than England at the moment, but the reason why London is the target is probably purely financial. Television contracts and selling suites are likely more lucrative in London than Germany. I don't think Germans are the type of people who will be willing to pay top dollar to go to games, while Londoners might.

This is a decent argument I guess I just feel like at the very least we should be fostering that interest while it still exists. In another ten to fifteen years there will be a whole new generation of Germans who weren't even alive when NFL Europe was kicking. Why in the world would you, a sport with extremely limited appeal on the world stage, not do everything you can to keep that interest alive in a tentpole like Germany?

The difference though is they have a thriving league/baseball culture of their own. The NFL should be working to establish that kind of culture in Germany based on what we saw in NFL Europe. yeah a franchise is the endgame but they should be building over there they way they are building in England.

And Japan is twice as far away from the West Coast as Europe is from the east otherwise we would be seeing movements towards a couple of japanese MLB teams just like they did with the West Coast in the 50's with the Giants/Dodgers double move.

...and after the US started the NFL International Series game in the UK...

Germany announced the creation of the Germany-Japan Bowl alliance in American football..,

"No country outside of North America has such a long and successful American Football tradition than Japan. President of the German American Football Federation (AFVD- American Football Verband Deutschland), Robert Huber said: "This game is an absolute highlight in the history of our federation. With Japan we will play against the second strongest country in the world."

Just saying...

I think your view makes a lot of sense. I especially think that it's much easier to gain popularity in a market that is not acclimated to rugby. If you take someone who watches soccer and have them watch Football, they might think it is interesting probably due to the novelty of the aggressiveness and tackling. If you take someone used to rugby, like my father, and have them watch football, they will think it makes no sense. Why do they have timeouts every second? Why do they have players who just play offense or just play defense or just kick the ball? Those are things Europeans I know say about football.

that's his point. it's not too much longer, so that isn't an issue

MLB isn't playing games in china while ignoring the baseball fever in Japan, so that comparison isn't valid.

it really does make little sense that they are so focused on England

pretty sure the London NFL Europe team was the first Euro team to move

The whole thing is silly. The weeks are too short and the travel too long. Teams bitch about playing back to back away games, they talk about west coast teams traveling to ETZ now. It's just too far and there is nothing wrong with that. Focus on Mexico or Canada if you MUST go international.
