So funny that you can get a giant cup of espresso here. A triple espresso from PJ's is surprisingly huge. This would be 14 shots in France. I'm going to swill this back and be weird as frick all afternoon.

I feel bad when I go to a proper restaurant with an espresso machine and order a double shot, only to let down by the portion size. I know that's the correct amount but for some reason I'm spoiled by the 8-10 fl oz portion you get at the southern coffee houses. This isn't anywhere as good as a manual machine, but I guess since all they have to do is push a button they DGAF.

Nevermind my foot tapping and pencil clicking all afternoon, just gnashing my teeth over here...

I don't understand what you're saying. A triple shot of espresso is tiny. It's nowhere near 8-10 fluid ounces. Are you counting milk?

Yea, not this one.

You can see the liquid line on the cup and I still have 4 oz or so left.

I don't put anything in coffee, tea, or espresso.

I have a quad every morning. I'd put the size at 4 to 6 ounces. If PJ's is giving you 10 ounces of espresso then they are mixing it with something other than Arabica Beans or they are charging you 10 bucks per cup.

And now for some coffee humor:

I bet they're using the same amount of coffe beans as whatever size you are ordering and just running more water through it.

It's an automatic machine, meaning there is no grinding and tamping going on. There's a reservoir of beans ontop the machine and they press a button(s) and put the cup under it. I've watched what I can from the back of the machine and they just stand in front of it and mash a button. Wait 30 seconds then hand me a giant cup full of very strong coffee. Like I said, it's not on the order of a legit espresso creation - but I like the sensation of drinking so much. That's the American part of this cluster thread.

its kinda like going to a redneck bar in small southern towns and asking for a scotch on the rocks....16 oz of dewars and ice, baby! gotta love culture deficiencies.

Yeah, I think they are just running more water through it. Besides, they are obviously using a different definition of 'shot.' A 'shot' at Starbucks is about an ounce. That's why my 4 shot is about 5 ounces.

A 10 ounce espresso would be 8 shots at Starbucks and I've never seen nor heard of anyone order one. It would be a heart attack.

On Sundays I get a 6 shot and I'm wired all day.

It seems like it's the difference b/t me pressing the small or large button on my Nespresso. I always do two of the big b/c American-like more is better.

In France if you order a "cafe americano" they make you an espresso and allow more water to run through to where it fills a five-or-so ounce cup. I think that's basically what they're doing in your coffe shop. I like that as well. One ounce of a beverage is sometimes not so satisfying.

That's not special to France. That is how you make a Cafe Americano.

That's the only place I ever order it so I thought it was particular to Europe in some way.

Man, US coffee nomenclature annoys me. If I order a macchiato, I want a macchiato: not a bucket of steamed milk with a little espresso.

PJ's pours a bigger shot.. a quad is much larger than other other places.

That being said, I learned to drink espresso at Dean and Delucca when I lived in NYC. Thought it was the best.. Moved back home a while and had espresso here.. Went up for a visit and had a D&D espresso.. and it was terrible.

Bottom line: Louisiana pours a damn good cup of coffee.. and espresso.

Respectfully must disagree; plenty of terrible espresso all over LA. Stale beans abound--even at respectable restaurants. PJs has become godawful in recent years since the Ballard bros bought it out. (Truly, it had begun to decline well before that.)

Also can't understand the places that are so proud of their Illy or other imported coffee: NOLA is still the largest green coffee port in N America, and a number of local roasteries turn out quality blends.

OK.. So where do you like the espresso? Do you prefer coffee to espresso? Who pours a good cup in your opinion?

I'm not challenging you to a debate.. I'm just curious to see what you like.. Because I love the stuff.

That is PJs problem. Espresso is about specificity, the amounts are universal. A large shot means under-extraction or diluted.
