Very true. Especially important where a foul ball or a bus is coming right at you.

You would not believe how hard it was for me to dig up this old thread I remembered from around here during the summer of 2010.

From My Dad (RIP DAD Love Ya Man) to my Kids

Do what you say you are going to do. Don't make promises you can't keep. Understand that as a parent you hope to give your children more opportunity than you had so that they can be even more successful than you.

No so sure about this one in all cases, and it also depends on how how you define this.

As some have alluded to, you can't do it only one way. You have to give them attention and affection and you have to provide discipline when it's needed. So many people seem to make the mistake of gravitating to one extreme or the other.

I'd say first comes he attention and affection part. Just little things like telling them you love them before they go to sleep at night. And if you work all week and thus don't see them a whole lot, I wouldn't spend every weekend playing golf or going out clubbing and sticking them at a babysitter.

The other part is discipline. You have to give the some room to be themselves and make their mistakes. But you can't let them do things like disrespect adults (or other kids for that matter) or do dangerous things.

And enjoy these years. One day you and your kids will look back on those years as "the good old days".

Teach by doing is always the best method.

Same advice I have for someone who just wants to be a good adult: don't make excuses for yourself. See your situation as your own responsibility.
Also, take only as much "me time" as you honestly need to stay sane. There will be gobs of time later in life to do whatever it is you might now choose over time with your kids.

Let the kid find his own happiness. Your happiness is not always his.
