Has anyone ever exposed one of the high dollar, tightly fitted, custom 1911s to mud, grit, or sand and seen how they perform?

Looser is often better when it comes to a fighting handgun.

BTW, where does the 8 round S&W 357 revolver fit in this discussion? More reliable than any auto and capacity comparable to most 1911 models.

Agreed, but a person wanting to survive has the choice to make the decision on his or her own.

EDIT: Personally I would choose something with high capacity. If I'm in a gunfight, I want the largest margin of error possible. This is the exact reason I carry a Kahr CM9 over a Springfield XDs. Even if the capacities are similar, I still get more chances to mess up with the Kahr.

But then again, if someone chooses the 1911, so be it.

Modern American military forces, including our very best, continue to rely on it as their preferred sidearm. Countless individuals use it for carry and self-defense as well as home-defense with no problem. So unless you want to put your money where your mouth is and dig up some statistics, or another form of evidence, that suggests a 1911 is anything but fully capable of tackling any situation your high cap Block can handle then you should probably STFU.

Statistics aren't on your side.
Thousands of individual citizens, members of the armed forces, and even law enforcement units (like SWAT teams: look up the LAPD SWAT team's preferred sidearm, or the FBI's HRT sidearm, or the Marines who comprise MARSOC for an even better example) aren't on your side. And a century of military combat in all conditions all around the world isn't on your side.

So unless you want to tell me that you're somehow facing more dangerous threats than arguably the best SWAT team in the country, not to mention numerous Spec Ops teams, as well as the FBI HRT team who cross trains with Delta, DEVGRU, the SAS and numerous other foreign Special Ops teams, then perhaps you should take your bloated ego along with your polymer toy and go bury them both in the backyard?

Nothing goes together like a strawman and a caricature. Here, I can do it too: You just gotta believe and trust in your few extra rounds because when you miss with the first 2/3rds or 3/4ths of your mag you just gotta trust in the fact that those last few magical rounds will find their way to their target and somehow drop them even though the majority of your ammo failed to do so. And buddy, don't even try to bring up some bullshite about all 1911's being practically antiques. Oh, and I like how I'm susceptible to adrenaline because I've apparently only taken my pistol out for casual range trips while you must obviously be some ice cold killer with nerves of steel, am I right? Or maybe it's that plastic cap gun you carry that makes you feel so invincible? Since you obviously can't read, I was the one that stressed the importance of training, familiarity, and comfort with one's weapon in order to be as prepared as possible for potential problems. You're the idiot whose mind can only latch onto a single point relating to ammo capacity,which I can easily negate by employing high capacity mags if I wish so I'd love to see what foot you'd have left to stand on in that case.
