Lap top advice needed

My asus has a bad virus and it's a little outdated. Tried to shake the bug and even the IT guys at work say I'm screwed and might just need a new one.
I want to keep it under $1,500. I've heard toshiba is solid but not sure what brand to go with. Looking at apple but they are high and I don't know much about them.
I'm not a hardcore gamer but would like to get back into computer games. Console games are just boring to me. All I would use it for is gaming, some surfing and paying bills (scared to use mine bc of the virus).
Not sure of specs I would need. I7, I5 processor, at least 16GB ram (DDR3 or other?)I guess, video card?, processor speed? and I have no clue about windows 8.
Also, where in the world is the best place to get it? I'm sure best buy isn't the greatest but I do have a fry's 10 miles from my house in Houston.
Any help is appreciated TIA

Do you do any heavy tasks that require a lot of processing power/ram?
Just need to surf and light gaming? What kind of games and what settings do u want to play on? Is size and portability a big factor?

With a gaming laptop, the Asus Republic of Gamers is probably going to be your best bang for the buck. I absolutely love mine, altho at 17", it is a monster.

The only time ive seen a laptop be bugged beyond repair is if it was hijacked and a bios pw was set. On a desktop that isnt a problem because you can usually reset the jumpers, on a laptop its generally death unless under warranty and the manufacturer is willing to reset to out of the box status.
What size screen do you want? 15"? 17"?
You don't need more than 8GB of RAM (DDR3 only) unless you are doing some form of editing (music, video, CAD, etc).
If you are comfortable buying a laptop you havent physically seen before, newegg and tigerdirect will have your best prices. If you really want to get your hands on one, you can try looking up a model on the above sites and then seeing if bestbuy or fry's has it in a floor model. They may even be willing to match the price for you.
As for brands, I like Asus, Lenovo, and Samsung in your price range.
ETA: for the $1000 -$1500 range, Id really look for a laptop that had SSD. The difference in speed is really remarkable, especially since virtually all other laptops run a 5400 rpm hdd.

I've heard great things about the Acer Aspire 7. Its about $1200, but it looks like a beast

No I'm not running anything heavy at all just games. Not sure what kind of games yet I'm open for suggestions. I thought acer wasn't that good years ago but maybe that changed. SSD sounds interesting.

Ah, the aspire isn't that great for gaming. I'd look into Asus or msi

cart ahead of the horse here, but keep in mind that heat kills gaming laptops really quickly and easily. make sure you keep that in mind and maybe invest in a cooling pad or something

a single 250GB SSD is a single drive that is 250GB in capacity to hold not only the OS but all your files as well.
the other is a hybrid system with a 16GB SSD that holds the OS only, and the 1 TB hard drive holds everything else.
unless you plan on using your laptop for mass file storage i would go with the 250GB SSD. personally i use a USB 3.0 external hard drive for file storage.

The Asus ROG laptops have 2 cooling fans vs only 1 on the MSI rigs. That pretty much sealed the deal for me on which one to get for me.

I don't see the asus g55vw available at fry's but the Lenovo y500 is. Also I don't see the top of those models on amazon. Both have great reviews but nobody has a straight up, side by side comparison which is a pain in the arse
