It's time for me to buy a new grill, and I'm going to go with another propane grill for now. After looking at a few, I have some questions about the pros/cons of infrared grills, and would like to hear some thoughts on them.

Bought a Char Grill Pro series Infrared a few years ago. It is okay, but a lot of trouble to keep clean. Those Infra red screens are impossible to clean and fall apart on me. And the angle irons and registers are just as shittily made as the cheap and will rust apart far before the stainless steel exterior. Plus all the thermometers immediatly broke so I can't even tell how hot it is.

Having said that, it cooks just fine. Just not sure if it is any better than an el cheapo model as I paid over 400 for it.

My next propane grill will be one of those barrel looking things with the smoker box on the side.

The big drawback is cleaning--the IR grills generate heat through a perforated, wire-mesh type plate. Its performance will decline if it gets clogged with crud.

something a wire brush and air compressor could handle?

You gonna do that after every meal? I wire brushed mine, but the holes are so tiny some just get clogged. Plus, the grill would come apart all the time and was an absolute pain to put back together. I bet they have changed that design though.

I did see a very good looking grill on good Eats though.

I'll try to find a pic.

brush? sure
hit with the air hose? probably not until I notice a decrease in performance.

been looking at the infrared grills and not sure how I feel about them

also considering a traeger but they are expensive

I bought a cheap charcoal pit from walmart to grill steaks, I am looking for something to cook chicken and pork on and also grill tuna or vegetables

I use my dad's infrared from time to time, and it's great for thin cuts & delicate, quick-cooking items (fish filets, shrimp, turkey cutlets). Not so good for larger, drippier things (skin-on chicken, bigger roasts). Haven't cleaned it, so can't speak to the ease/difficulty.

My father has a TEC grill and that MFer gets hot as frick. You don't walk away from meat on that thing.
