Can Someone Explain All the Different Things Google Does...

Im not the most technologically intelligent man but my 19 year old nephew keeps preaching to me how google is the future and how youtube is basically a gigantic collection of internet real estate where ppl make lots of money posting videos like the "harlem shake" he showed me.
I always thought google was a search engine and thought the upcoming glasses were silly.
My 19 yr old nephew was having lunch with me and I told him I wanted to buy him stock the way my uncle did for me 17 years ago so I asked him what company he wanted to hold for the future and he said.....Google.....someone please tell me more, I don't even see a dividend, i wanted to buy him DRIPs like my uncle did with some blue chips

so is my nephew nuts for wanting this to be the stock I buy him? My uncle put $1000 in 5 dividend stocks for me 15 years ago and I wanted to do the same....he said no I want $5000 of google....thats like 6 shares haha
I dont know much about google, but the $5000 my uncle gave me in the 90's was nearly $41,000 now in dividend stocks in a DRIP....altria,coke,Mcdonalds,exxon etc.....DRIP's build value over time, google would have to be strictly appreciation.....are its future prospects that bright? I mean it's $800/share it would have to go to $6400/share or similar via splits to reach similar appreciation

Nope. I will say Google can probably explain more about me than I can myself. They have my email, my search history, my phone contacts, my life. With little research of my browsing history, Google could have charts displaying the peak time for me fapping, who I fapped to the most often, how long it took me to fap on average. That was then Google! I have since learned to broaden my footprint, even though the other search engines are just not the same

I wouldn't invest in Google right now as a long-term play. They are still a tech company and those only stay at the top as they innovate at high rates. Google is a safe bet now, but even mighty MSFT is starting to hit road bumps.
I like Amazon long term because it is a forward looking company that will be more than just a retailer in the future.

EVERYTHING! But for real I read a very interesting article a while back that explained how Google is basically more powerful than the U.S. gov because of how much information they hold on nearly every person in the country.

I'll say what Google has on me.
1) Priority search engine
2) Calendar
3) Maps/Directions
4) Android OS on my phone
5) Google Drive - share docs/have access to files on my laptop, mobile, and tablet simultaneously
6) Google music - Can upload 20,000 of your songs onto their drive and play them from anywhere I have the app installed (Phone,Tablet,laptop again).
7) Google Portfolio
8) Google Chrome web browser
9) Gmail email client
10) Youtube
I'm not saying they will continue to be exceptional, I'm just saying they got their hand in everything and do all kinds of stuff beyond search.

Google will own the self driving car space when it is viable and gets through the legal hoops.
Auto OEMs do not have the expertise that Google does in this area...they will lean on GOOG to do the driverless cars and leverage the Google mapping precision. Google is a software company and OEMs make hardware...so this is a natural progression whether the OEMs want it that way or not.

Judging by your post a few days/weeks back about GE and exactly what they do, and by the responses here, I would stay away.

Google made 96% of its ~$38 billion in revenue in 2011 from simple ad clicks.
Google knows that the simple Google search box will not hold a dominant position forever, so it continually tries to branch out in other ways so as to maintain eyeballs on ads for potential mouse clicks from customers.
This is why it's so invested in the Android OS for mobile devices, and why it purchased the Motorola handset manufacturer as insurance to make sure its OS will always have good mobile market share, regardless of what mobile companies currently have Android contracts negotiated.
It invests a lot in developing cloud office software, including Google Docs, perhaps sending a message to Microsoft that it can invade MSFT's turf at any time. Gmail, Google Translate, Google's Chrome web browser, etc., are also somewhat related to this.
One could potentially see Google using Google Books to become a serious competitor to Amazon, or something similar to become a serious competitor to Apple's iTunes. Who knows?
It acquires smaller tech companies such as YouTube and Blogger, and includes them in its larger arsenal.
It also spends tons of money on high profile research endeavors, such as Google Earth, driverless cars, etc., which mostly seem geared toward keeping good brand recognition.
Like Facebook, it has tons of customers and valuable consumer data that might be harnessed for greater profits some day, but which has uncertain value today.
Unlike Facebook, it also has a huge stream of steady income of ad revenue from its current search engine.

To add to this, I think Google also sees commute time as time that could be spent browsing the web and clicking ads.
