I enjoyed watching it last year, would like to learn more. I enjoyed the 15s but watching 7s did nothing for me.

the number of players
13 for league and 15 for union

and a few of the rules

and they way they tackle, and i don't think league uses the scrum like union does.

league is a bit more 'wide open' and union is bit 'slower'

3 minutes of very high paced League play

dude, that's union, and it debunks the myth that union can't be "wide open"

haha, you're just not conditioned to that wide open expansive southern hemisphere rugby after watching that 10 man rugby of the Six Nations countries (though it's been better as of late).

Nah Super Rugby is the top rung of professional rugby union in the Southern Hemisphere. Also called the Super 15. It's got three conferences with 5 teams each from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. And like with the international game it's usually a Kiwi side that wins the championship. The current premieres are The Chiefs based in Hamilton New Zealand.

I'm looking forward to the Stormers vs Brumbies match this weekend, should be a good one.

For League the top professional competition is the NRL. Which is actually the more popular brand of rugby in Australia neither both Union and League are as popular as Aussie Rules Football.

The timing is perfect for it. Starts up right as the pros in the Northern Hemisphere are finishing up their season. Between the two hemispheres there's pretty much year round Rugby!

And you'll already know a lot of the players. All the All Blacks, Springboks and Wallabies players play in Super Rugby.

yep, an NZ team has won 11 out of 17 years, but the last 3 years have had a winner from each country

SA: Bulls 2010
AUS: Reds 2011
NZ: Chiefs 2012

Australia is very regional too in which sports are most popular. Queensland is more union, New South Wales is Rugby League, and Melbourne/Victoria is Aussie Rules. But overall, AFL is the most attended.

I remember a guy ready to fight me when I was in the Gold Coast because I said I liked union better than league.

if you have Directv, they show all the matches for free, on channel 490. They come on at weird times though, so you gotta use the DVR.
