Or is it only memorable for Hopkins' performance as Hannibal Lecter?

Come on, man. The movie features one of the top 10 best bad guys in history:

Hopkins had more screen time in two other movies but few think they are better than SotL.

Hopkins AND Foster

The guy who played Buffalo Bill was very good as well.

ETA: Yeah, that guy.

Its an outstanding film and Hopkins was incredible, but was so was Foster, Scott Glenn and Ted Levine.

The source material from the book is some of hte best that any director could ever dream of working with...incredible novel

Yes.

You could plop Silence in theaters now, with no updating, and it would be just as huge. Unlike most thrillers.

What kind of great?

An overall amazing, historically important and influential film? No, not at all.

A great mix of writing, acting, editing, etc.? Eh, probably so, but maybe not. It's certainly a character piece and it is great at that. Not sure the rest is really up to snuff. But it's debatable.

all of this

No. IMO, it looks really, really dated now.

I watched it several years ago, when I was really in to "The X Files" and realized that Clarice Starling is the Appalachian version of Dana Scully. Chris Carter ripped off that character wholesale...

The all-around cast is fantastic. All the pieces fit perfectly.

Except the Senator's kidnapped daughter - she sucked.

Yes. As most have already mentioned, it's a smart, well-written thriller with great acting.

I'm probably in the minority that actually liked Hannibal on here.

Lol wit?

Scully is not a profiler
Comes from a stable family
Has siblings
Works on completely different types of cases
Scully is a medical doctor

She's a chick and she works for the bureau, that's it

Clarice and Scully have similar personalities. There's a toughness there, along with the book smarts. And a willingness to take risks. And they're attractive women who turn down their sexuality. It's a deeper sort of commonality, more than the fact that one had a stable family and the other didn't .

Or I may be a million miles off base. It's just something I observed
