Nice. I'm thinking of dry hopping the rest of the citra pack, (.3 oz) and some cascade whole leaf hops.

So i'm finishing up. And i only have 4.5 gallons.

Should i top off, or just be happy with what i got?

Did you hit the gravity you were shooting for or is it higher? If it is what you were shooting for, I'd leave it alone. Personally, I never add if I'm under on volume. But I am rarely under volume as I calculate for 5.5 gallons if doing a 5 gallon brew.

I'd go with what you have.

Bump for the week, and wanted to post this pic. This is my filtering process I was talking about in a previous thread. I did the swirl and let sit 10 minutes technique before transferring to carboy. Didn't clog up my strainer nearly as much.

I need to try to filter mine better. I use a pretty fine screen, but not the screen that came with the funnel. I should use it too I suppose

That one with the funnel is finer than the stainless one. I use the stainless to catch the bigger materials, because it's easier to dump, and when the fine strainer is backed up, i take some sanitized tongs and try to grab as much of the hop debris off the strainer.

I think I'm going to try batch sparging next time. See how that goes.

Do you fly sparge now?

Yeah, same setup that you have with the 10-gallon coolers and sparge arm.

I've heard that efficiency is reduced somewhat when batch sparging, as compared to fly sparge. So far, i've done 4 all-grain batches. My first batch was a learning curve, and i believe i got 74% eff. Second batch i made a bad calculation with water amount, again had about 70-74% eff. But my last 2 brews have been more typical of how i expect to be brewing and both have measured at 83/84%. Do you sparge at a slow rate? It typically takes me about 30-45 minutes to gather 6.5 gallons of wort.

Also. I had a taste of my brew after measuring the gravity. It's going to be pretty damn good. I loved the hop flavor, and once that sweet wort converts, it's going to be tasty, i hope. I used white labs california ale yeast. First time using white labs, typically i use wyeast.

Yeah, I sparge pretty slow. Takes a good while to get to volume.

My efficiencies have all been really low since my first all grain batch. Trying to figure out why.

Hmmm...

Are your temperatures pretty constant?
Do you recirculate or vorlauf?
How much wort are you fermenting? For all-grain, i rarely get more than 4.5 gallons. I'm going to start planning my brews for 5.5 gallons in the future.

Temps are good, I use 5.2 but need to get some strips so I can check ph as well. Last few batches I took readings and stayed within a degree of 150. Don't think that's the problem unless my thermometer is way off, but it checks out with the thermometer on the brew pot I use to heat the strike water as well.

I did not vorlauf last time, probably one component of the low efficiency.

I generally aim for 6 gallons per-boil, usually about 5 to 5.5 make it into the fermenter.

I aim for 6.5 gallons into my brewpot. I end up with 4.5 this last time. I think i need to remeasure my carboys and my brewpot.

One thing i did notice. The last 2 times i brewed, and i got high efficiencies. I did not stir up the grains while they were mashing. I just let them sit the whole hour. Maybe that has something to do with it? My previous 2 all-grain batches i would mix up the grain bed a little.
