1) no but there are areas in the state where public schools depend on gate money from annual games with local privates

2) not always but there is usually a higher level of involvement in most private programs that often creates higher expectations

3) students and parents at a private school are treated more like a customer and the coaches are motivated to get the most out of what they have on hand. In my personal experience at a public school, the coaches treated us like a commodity because there were always more of us coming from where we came from. That is not the way it is everywhere obviously.

4) the comments have been that they won't be worth much because the competitive level will be dragged down

But, even if true, it still doesn't change the fact that a school with less than 300 boys would be forced to play schools with over 3X that number (over 1000 boys). This obviously doesn't just apply to EDW, but basically to all 3A "select" schools. Crazy, the overwhelming majority of such schools would have no chance to advance.

Umm... EDW in many years will be knocked out of the playoffs by 1 of 2 teams (Curtis or Evangel), and both of those schools have alot less boys than EDW does.

Don't think it's fair that your school has no chance of winning because it has to play Curtis or Evangel? Well neither do the public schools.

Welcome to the party!

Curtis keeps getting brought up but Curtis can't come close to the talent that a school like Karr can put on the field

Curtis can out execute a team like Karr but that is it. If the football is better on the select side and you can get into the select bracket for free at a charter school with open enrollment then what is to stop them from dominating everything?

then why do the privates need the publics so bad? i'd like to hear a response on this one.

they don't NEED them ... they'd just like one association.

I don't know about ED White... but the three 5-A schools here don't usually play privates on a yearly basis.

We play Brother Martin, and NOT because they bring us money, because WE save & bring them money. They play us at home for both years of the contract. They don't have to rent a stadium to host a home game, they bring maybe 200-300 fans down to Mathews, and split the gate of a packed home side (whether we're good or not).

It is true the inner city schools don't bring many fans but they'll be just fine. If it ends up where they can't play the privates anymore for a paycheck they'll just replace those teams with rural teams (Lafourche/Terrebonne/St John/St James/St Charles) because all those teams will be looking to fill schedules too.

I heard the exec committee split the selects into 5 divisions today, any truth to that?

Strangely, I don't think I ever saw 1A championships or 3A referred to as not being worth much.

I hope selects can play all the way up to 5A if they want. Otherwise that'll suck.

Curtis vs Karr Signees

Curtis
- 2014 (4 with D1 offers, 2- 4 star players)
- 2013 (7 with D1 offers)
- 2012 (2 D1 signees)
- 2011 (1 with D1 offers, 1- 1AA signee)
- 2010 (3 D1 signees, 2- 1AA signees)
- 2009 (3 D1 signees)
- 2008 (4 D1 signees, 1- 1AA signee)
- 2007 (7 D1 signees)

Karr
- 2014 (2 with D1 offers, 2 4- star players)
- 2013 (2 with D1 offers)
- 2012 (4 D1 signees, 1 with D1 offers)
- 2011 (2 D1 signees, 1- 1AA signee)
- 2010 (4 D1 signees, 4- 1AA signees)
- 2009 (3 D1 signees, 1 with D1 offer)
- 2008 (1- 1AA signee)
- 2007 (2 D1 signees)

Yep, not even close!

Forgive me if I'll wait to see if Karr can sustain the level they're at with a new head coach, and after next year having to recover from the lost of 2 of the best players in the state. Until then I'll hedge my bets on Curtis's (25 championships) and Evangel's (13 championships) and history of sustainability over Karr's 1 championship in the past 20 years.

Excuse me 2 in 19 years, 19 years apart. 2 in the history of the school.

I'd still bet on Curtis & Evangel's sustainability over Karr's. Plenty of teams have come up and challenged Curtis & Evangel (St James, Salmen, OP Walker among others) but none have been able to sustain it.

Karr has beaten curtis the same number of times OPW has

Sadly the overwhelming majority of talent at a place like Karr never comes close to its potential

If you want to make the obvious point that Curtis is better at developing their kids to reach their potential then yay for you. If you want to try to understand the point that Karr has an abundance of kids that are off the charts physically but don't necessarily take care of themselves, their school work, etc

The outstanding kids at Curtis get every bit of attention they need to develop into the best they can be. Some of the best talent at Karr may never get eligible or may only be eligible for a portion of their HS career. One thing Juluke did was get those kids in the program and develop them to a point to rival even Curtis in recruiting circles. They have been there in cycles but they didn't always see the field or stay there.

I'd agree with most of that.

However, it also goes a bit to why I mention Curtis & Evangel and not Karr. Consistent developed talent is better than raw POTENTIAL. Will Karr be the most talented team in the state next year? Probably. Would they beat Curtis? Possibly. Were they the most talented team this season? Now that's not so cut and dry.

Will Karr still be competing with Curtis & Evangel 5 years from now? 10 years from now? 15? That remains to be seen, and like I said if I were to bet on it I'd bet Curtis & Evangel are still playing at this high a level years from now than I would bet Karr will be.

Plenty of talented programs in the New Orleans area have cycled up and down and were just 1 bad hire from the downward spiral. Hell look at Destrehan they went from 2 strait 5A titles to terrible because of a bad hire. You think their talent just disappeared? Karr is replacing Juluke. The new coach looks like a good hire, but it hasn't been proven yet if he'll be able to sustain what Karr's built.

It's mainly a discipline issue at Karr. I've seen kids piss away their athletic careers at Karr because they were mostly interested in smoking and partying rather than working hard. Kids who were surefire locks to be major division one athletes are graduating with minor scholarships to small schools if even that because of laziness.

But it got to the point where pretty much all competition was choked out of one class each year leading to some pretty boring football

Wherever Curtis and ECA were placed. That is the root cause of all of this angst, precipitated by the Winnfield principal trying to ensure her kids could get a trophy. In the past 4 years my kids were eliminated by Curtis, Curtis, Calvary and ECA. Hey, sucks for us, in years in which we beat other playoff teams from higher classes, but it was the hand we were dealt. This year, the ECA game could have easily gone our way. It's interesting that all this upheaval is to throw the two lepers into someone else's laps. Nothing more. Everyone wants a trophy, even if they have to get there administratively instead of earning it.

And to the posters that don't believe the public schools want our gate revenue, come witness the stands at one of the public school games in the Baton Rouge area and then get back with me. It isn't unusual for the home team to give us the home side stands because there are so many more of our fans than theirs. And we are a small school.

And for the record, I graduated from a public HS in Baton Rouge (RIP)

This doesn't apply to every school and that is where the disconnect is coming in at least for me.

Most of these schools will travel well if this does happen. I'd like to check out games in NOLA. Only time I have ever done that was for a playoff game. I don't know that these places bring what a private would bring as for as a gate, when you consider vicinity. It certainly would suffice though.

clhstrojans, how do you feel about your schools vote of yes?

I say again... if the split happens... do we ever see Private vs Public +1?

No.. the bad blood created by the vote has created a pretty wide chasm.
