I agree this is the worst city of its size I've ever been in for Mexican food. I have not found a single place here that I thought was above average. And a lot of the Mex restaurants are down right awful.

Houston has it right when it comes to Tex Mex and traditional Mexican

Dammit. ETA: I think the reason for this is because of inherent competition. What I mean by that is that Mexican food is generically speaking usually low priced (see: best tacos in Houston @ $1.50). In Houston, for instance, its obviously more of the traditional food type, whereas its not in NOLA and thus has to compete with the traditional food types that already exist. Its not a matter of quality of one food type versus the other, its just what's ingrained into the culture in that area (philly cheese steaks, deli sandwichs, hotdogs/pizza, etc). In addition, "up-scale" Mexican food seems like it is just really hard to pull off. I've been to Hugo's 4 or 5 times and I've always thought it was just okay even though the menu looks great. TexMex doesn't count in my mind, meat + pounds of cheese + sour cream + free chips and salsa is marginally different from one place to another as far as I'm concerned.

You got to go to the suburbs where rent and thus the food is cheaper, and you'll find better, owned, staffed and cooked in by actual Mexicans or other Latin or South Americans.

Cross the river, and there are small, whole in the wall Mexican places literally all over, all of which are better than El Gato Negro, Taqueria Corona, etc.

On Stumpf and Terry Parkway is El Potosi, or Los Panchos (they seem to have two names. not sure which is the right one).

Terry Pkwy and Carol Sue has a latin grocery store, ironically owned by an arab guy, that has seriously awesome cooked food. They also have a crazy meet counter, where you can get plain or marinated "fajita meat" (skirt steak), chicken feet, and all sorts of crazy shite.

On Belle Chasse Highway is La Pupuseria, technically El Salvadoran, but awesome.

Belle Chasse Hwy and gretna Blvd is El mesquite. My least favorite, but still pretty good.

There is a hole in the wall on Stumpf and the expressway. Don't know the name. Has awesome tacos.

I think the issue is Mexican food needs to generally be cheap, thus no $$ for the overhead of fancy places. Every fancy Mexican place I've ever been has for the most part sucked.

Ate at Taqueria Guerrero tonight and it was awesome. They ran out of torta bread, so I went with a carnitas gordito, barbacoa taco and chorizo taco. All was great, I think it will be my new go-to place.

I love the place. I've pimped it here before but never got any good responses from other posters.

La Fiesta

Also..there's a little shack on the Expressway called Taqueria Sanchez and it's very cheap and really good.

I think he is talking about Taqueria Sanchez. That place as authentic as can be. In fact, if you don't speak Spanish, they often have to get the one person who speaks broken English to assist you.

It looks super sketchy, but I've been there a bunch of times. The tacos are really good, and really cheap.
