If you want to be convinced that Monte Kiffin is the right man for the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator job, just give Larry Lacewell a call.
Lacewell, the former Cowboys scouting director who remains a member of Jerry’s unofficial advisory committee, readily admits that he has a “man crush” on the 72-year-old Kiffin. The Cowboys met with Kiffin at Valley Ranch on Thursday, and Lacewell assumes his old friend will officially become Rob Ryan’s replacement soon. (UPDATE: Sources said the deal is done.)
“Frankly, I think it’s the best hire the Cowboys have ever made,” Lacewell told ESPNDallas.com on Friday morning. “Well, other than Jimmy [Johnson].”
Lacewell completely dismisses the mediocre results Kiffin got as the defensive coordinator on his son Lane’s USC staff, saying Kiffin did the best he could do despite talent issues that stem in part from NCAA-sanctioned recruiting restrictions. Lacewell, who visited USC last summer during an off day in the Cowboys’ training camp, said Kiffin is as passionate and energetic as ever.
In other words, Lacewell believes Kiffin is still the same guy whose defenses were dominant during his 13-year tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kiffin was considered a legendary NFL defensive coordinator when he left Tampa to join his son in the college ranks.
Tampa Bay ranked among the NFL’s top 10 in scoring defense 11 times and total defense 12 times under Kiffin. The Bucs were top five in both categories six times, including a double No. 1 overall rank during their Super Bowl championship season.
“To fall into Monte Kiffin is just a gift,” said Lacewell, who used Kiffin as a sounding board when Mike Zimmer copied his scheme with the Cowboys. “To pull this off is just a coup. Whoever thought of this was real smart.”

A few thoughts on the move to the 4-3.
If Ratliff can get healthy and stay that way, he can return to being a big factor. But still probably a part-time player.
Sean Lissemore should blossom as a 4-3 tackle. I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a semi-star. Should be able to handle either tackle position.
Losing Josh Brent is no longer such a big deal. The Cowboys got stronger in the middle instantly by switching to the 4-3.
If Spears is still around, I think he too could finally get the most out of his skills as a 4-3 tackle, despite his age. But he's probably gone.
It's going to be fun watching DeMarcus Ware become an all pro defensive end. He can play some OLB as well, much like the Dolphins used Jason Smith.
Victor Butler...it's been nice knowing you.
Kyle Wilbur is now probably a fourth round bust rather than an early injury disappointment. Maybe they can get a late draft pick for him from a 3-4 team. Too much of a tweener.

It rarely ever works out how you expect, especially a guy from a different era. Seems like a very Jerry hire. But I am happy about going to a 4-3. The Cowboys have only had one decent 3-4 defense under Wade, and that one was a fairly unconventional 3-4. They've never been able to get the proper base talent for that defense. Oh, well. We shall see, I guess. We have some folks that may fit a 4-3 base (Crawford, for instance), but I still would have preferred building a future over trying to recreate the past.

Been reading a little about the 4-3 and it keeps coming up that Ware (particularly with his nagging shoulder injury) might not fare well. Is he tradeable now? I dunno if the cap would allow, but if so, should we look to the future at that position?
Is hate to see him go, but I'd hate it more if he had to play out his career in a scheme he doesn't fit into.
Thoughts?

I wouldn't be opposed to trading Ware for a more traditional middle linebacker and have Lee and Carter be OLB. actually that sounds pretty damn good

Well, last year I did a full mock draft that turned into a colossal waste of time after a trade or two, so I decided to approach it a little differently this year. Below are names I have seen Dallas drafting in various mock sites. My favorite (or best case) in BOLD type:

Definitely need to go OL/S with the first two picks, in no particular order
If Jerrah can grab Cooper (doubtful) they could actually hold off and get a guy like Shamarko Thomas in the third round.
I think Vacarro is more likely at this point because I imagine Cooper and Wormack will be gone
