Does Blackcloud really ruin barrels or is that a myth?

I know it's lethal compared to other steel shot. I consistently kill ducks 10-15 yds further than the guys I hunt with, and it rolls their asses.

I've always heard you shouldn't shoot them through ported chokes.

bbvdd, how's your season going up there?

I don't see how it could. It has a full shot cup wad.

It would ruin an old full choke barrel like any other steel shot will but as far as it being worse than any other steel shot, I don't see it.

I didn't think so, but every time I pull out a box, people start spouting this BS. I couldn't see how, and honestly don't give a shite if it does or not, cuz it's some duck killing shite.

Stay away from ported chokes and you'll be fine. They do no more, damage than any other steel shot

Well it'd be pretty dumb to shoot something you KNEW was tearing your barrel up. Shotgun barrels aren't exactly free.

Why do people say to not use ported chokes? It's a full shot cup wad.

I don't use a ported choke anyway, so I guess I'm good to go.

I really haven't hunted much since Nov. I did go Sat morning and took my son and my nephew (his first duck hunt). They really weren't flying well at all.

Hurt a few reports from around us and they did ok but we didn't have much.

What's the purpose of a ported choke?

the purpose of many of the extended tubes is to allow the wad and BBs to leave the barrel separately.... they hold the wad back a split second allowing the BBs to leave unobstructed thus giving a better pattern "pattern master tube".... The black cloud and others like it do this w/o the assistance of the tube.
I personally shot some of the hevi steel out of a pattern master tube on the old wingmaster and its nasty at 30-45yds... tough shooting closer in, but the pattern in dense

Blackcloud/Hevi-shot and others are harder than steel and more dense than lead. Due to the hardness the manufacturers use a special shot cup to prevent barrel damage. They can be fired through any gun made to handle steel shot.

Actually, that's pretty incorrect.

Blackcloud is steel shot. It's nowhere close to as dense as lead and is not harder than modern barrel steel.

Hevi-shot is an alloy that is more dense than lead, but it isn't as hard as steel. It's hardness is somewhere around lead IIRC.

beat me too it....
hevi shot/metal or whatever its called is as malleable as lead and thus delivering more energy on impact that steel does. The problem with steel is that it doesn't deliver the knockdown power on impact that lead and hevi shot does....
the blackcloud i'm not super familiar with, but i think it has some lead properties as well along with the advanced wad capabilities.

Hardness is a measure of the ability to be scratched or penetrated. Malleability measures the ability to be contorted or formed/bent. They are unique measures that are not euphemisms for one another. Ballistic Products who manufactures Hevi Shot lists on their website that Hevi is harder than steel. I choose not to argue with them.

This article is a bit old, but also agrees that Hevi is harder.

I could be wrong though but these are the assumptions I've been working with when hand loading turkey shells.

I stand corrected

What I'm saying is, black cloud and hevi-shot should not nearly be lumped into the same conversation as they are nowhere near the same monster. Nearly nothing that applies to hevishot applies to blackcloud, as blackcloud is just saturn shaped steel shot.
