Why not a cookbook for a particular style of cooking he likes?

http://www.wokshop.com/products_main.html

This shop is amazing. Check out he woks and knives and cleavers and chopping blocks...Prices are amazing. Real deal stuff, but you may not be able to get your order shipped in time for Christmas. I bought my wife a wok from there almost 10 years ago and it's been amazing. Probably never need to replace it.

ETA: Check out the Hard to Find items. Too cool.

I like Lucky Peach but the Chinatown issue didn't really do anything for me. Would be ideal for this bf though. I couldn't live without my Food & Wine subscription, fwiw.

Lucky Peach is a strange piece of work. The more you read it, the less interesting it becomes. First issue, I read cover to cover in one sitting; the Chinatown one is so boring and pedantic, its sat mostly unread for two months or so.

Its just so inside baseball.

Are you in BR?

I really like the Red Stick Spice company for a gift card.

Call Penzeys spices 1-800 number, and pick up something from them. The best spices sold, and given the size of the packages of most the cheapest stuff on the market. The crap at the store is just that , crap.
