That is very good jambalaya, in Wisconsin.

Although the brown version of the dish, which is preferred west of the New Orleans area, is not the original. Jambalaya, which roughly translates to ham with rice, originally contained whatever vegetable were on hand, including okra and tomatoes.

In New Orleans I have had restaurant versions which included shrimp and tomatoes, and they were very good. The brown version is very popular too, I go with the skill of the chef to produce good eats.

Agreed, Cat. He should have gone with 2 lbs of fresh, whole okra...go big or go home.

Sorry for the bump, but it's taken me a while to get back to this. This is NOT my recipe! I found this while reading the JFP site and thought you guys would get a kick out of it. Makes me wonder what it takes to become a food blogger. Check out the picture of the finished "jambalaya".

Awesome

You may have made something you enjoy, but it ain't jambalaya.

Agree with others: no tomato products, no okra...
also, no bay leaf, no celery

Also, too... meat is fried (browned in some kind of fat, prior to adding rice... not boiled).

and sorry... I jumped the gun before reading the entire thread;

I was just so emotional. WTF is that?

I had friends in west Texas, who thought stewed okra was gumbo. Seriously.
