re: It's time to ban dog deer hunting

Since both of you look as if you are from bama I can understand you not liking dog hunting. Dog hunting in the swamp is a necessary evil. 2-4 foot of water covering almost the entire area you hunt, what would you do.

Glad to know you hate one of the oldest forms of hunting.

quote:

Their holding rifles trying to "catch" dogs up on the damn highway.

Perhaps they just don't want to leave their rifle laying in the woods somewhere? Just because they are there with a gun doesn't mean they're trying to kill deer on the road. As much as you hate it, trying to catch dogs on the side of the road is 100% legal. They own it as much as you do.

quote:

Oh yeah, the timber lease behind me where they do this is also a 3000 acre lease...

Great. I bet it isn't ballsack deep swamp.

I'm not a huge fan of dog hunting but I would be more than willing to bet most complaining don't have the balls to handle it like witz whatever his Name is And I bet most have been too chicken shite to confront the people doing it.
I also have major issues with banning stuff. That's a chicken shite way of dealing with it.

re: It's time to ban dog deer hunting

I personally don't have deer hounds, but when visiting my parents and I hear several running a deer a go grab a gun and run like hell to where I know they will cross our property. Unfortunately the deer is usually already gone and all I get to watch is the hounds do their thing, which is mighty impressive to me. I wish I could run deer, but Rabbits and beagles will suffice. I seriously can't believe that one group of hunters is turning against another group, sad day.

But while we're at it I would like to ban corn, food plots and guns for hunting. Let's go to nothing but stalking with bows, knives and spears. That would really be hunting and make for some quiet woods.

re: It's time to ban dog deer hunting

I own land in Franklin County, MS and the dog hunters are a serious problem. If you don't know about their activity here or are just in complete denial of the actions of these people so be it. But as a landowner it is nearly impossible to run a Quality Deer Management Program on my own land due to the incessant dogs being dragged off our land. Had to leave my Thanksgiving dinner across the road from our house to go talk to dog owners driving into our driveway to retrieve their dogs from our land..so yeah, they know what they are doing is not appreciated. We've talked with them and with the wardens and the vast majority of these people have been drinking all day and are from out of state, it's a bad situation.

I can see both sides in this argument. We need to find a way to deal with the problem without getting the law involved. More laws rarely help.

I used to love dog hunting when I was a kid. Owned a pack of rabbit beagles till I was old enough to leave home and I get a real deep thrill anytime I hear beagles on a rabbit. Or dogs on a deer. But there's dogs running around my place that chase deer practically every day of the year and at least one of them is collared and I'm pretty sure these are one of the 'neighbors' dogs so I haven't popped them yet. They mess me up one day and I might not be so forgiving.

It sucks that dog hunting is probably on the way out. Leases and management and the expense involved all are making it where unless you have an enclosure or are surrounded by public land, you're almost guaranteed to be fricking up somebody's hunt eventually.

Golden Rule would be a good place to start. I would never trespass on someone else's property. Releasing dogs into private property is the same thing in my opinion. This is simply people not respecting the property rights of others.

I didn't say I hate the type of hunting, it's fine if you can stay on your own place. I said I hate the outlaws who do it around my property.

quote:

Perhaps they just don't want to leave their rifle laying in the woods somewhere?

Or in their truck parked right behind them on the side of the road.

quote:

Just because they are there with a gun doesn't mean they're trying to kill deer on the road.

Except for the guy who bragged about killing a nice buck on my property using my fence as a rest. He bragged to the wrong folks and it got back to me...

quote:

As much as you hate it, trying to catch dogs on the side of the road is 100% legal. They own it as much as you do.

I agree, but they know deer follow the creek out and so they turn them loose on their property and drive around to my property to hunt. Also, did I mention it's a major highway? Catching them is fine, you don't need a gun to catch dogs.

quote:

Great. I bet it isn't ballsack deep swamp.

It's not. Mostly pine timberland where dogs aren't necessary. I kill deer off my little piece of property without dogs... Did I mention they have over 3000 plus acres and I'm hunting a tract about 40 acres.

Like I said, it just so happens I'm on a prime creek bottom and everything coming out of those woods uses it.

I have no problem if you stay on your property, the guys around me are the kind that "have been hunting here for years" yet we've owned it since 1992.

For about the 5th time in this thread, I hate them as much as you do.

quote:

I'd be very interested to see proof that the dogs are messing up your deer management. Me thinks you are going off feelings rather than data. You'd be the first I've ever seen produce data that dogs are actually messing up your hunting.

quote:

We've talked with them and with the wardens and the vast majority of these people have been drinking all day and are from out of state

Once again, we are not all like that, and I hate them as much as you do.

re: It's time to ban dog deer hunting

Would be willing to learn to bow hunt or hunt with a rock in order to protect our land. When I return to BR to work/live each week I only worry about my elderly parents who live on our land while the dog hunters have attempted to intimidate them and increase their hunting during the weekdays..not true outdoor men by a long stretch. I don't care if they want to hunt with a blood alcohol over 2, naked and with bazookas as long as they stay on their own land or public land.

i realize the crux of the argument is the dogs getting onto private property. i honestly don't how you could fix that outside of banning dog hunting.

You most definitely said you "hate people running dogs"

Ahh the good old redneck road dog hunter

The very reason I am forced to bear this burden of trying to keep the sport I grew up to love from getting outlawed.

Funny one dog hunter I know spent 2 hours helping his neighbor who is vehemently anti dog....look for a bow wounded deer that went about a half a mile INto his property...

re: It's time to ban dog deer hunting

So how would you like me to acquire that data. Common sense says if our cameras show a certain buck/doe ratio and we are able to age the bucks during the year then never see them again while seeing numerous dogs on our land something has changed. If I can prove your dogs are on my land shouldn't that be enough for you to have the balls as a man to look me in the eye and apologize and make an effort not to have it happen again. What if I just released cats at your house every night? Emotional, yeah, when a drunk guy calling his dogs at the front of our driveway asks my 80 y/o Army veteran dad what is he going to do..yeah, that sorta irks me. FYI my dad took a picture of the guys plates and the woman hiding on the floorboard asking him not to take her picture. Some solid stock there..again from out of state. Take your rose colored glasses off and work to rein in the trash. I'm all for you enjoying your heritage just don't do it on my property.

Why not build a high fence to keep them out?

High fences are pricey, and not completely ethical in my humble opinion. Why can't they keep their dogs off my property? Again, hunt with tigers if you want just be law abiding, ethical and respectful of others.

For about the 6th time

I HATE THEM AS MUCH AS YOU DO. Introduce me to one and I'll tell him he's a piece of shite. I hunt with dogs and other than that I have nothing in common with the people you are describing. Quit lumping me into the group with him.
