Booty set the national passing record. It has since been broken, but still he was much more highly touted than Peyton. Then he signed with the Marlins and won a World Series before returning to LSU

Josh Booty, (the person) has given LSU fans amnesia about Josh Booty (the recruit)..
He was as highly touted as anyone I can remember.

I just don't remember it that way. I remember hearing much more about Peyton, in large part because of his last name. I'm from NO so, I'm sure that's part of it, but I'd guess breaking a record is a lot bigger deal closer to where Booty played. Any idea who has the record now?

Of course Booty got a lot of attention, especially being committed to LSU. I also remember there being a debate who was better, or that they were 1 and 1a that type of stuff.

McKnight and Randle were both #2 on Rivals, but I don't remember them getting as much hype as Fournette.

The recruiting industry is way different from even five years ago.

Fournette may feel like the most hyped because he's still a junior but we've been talking about him since his Freshman year.

It's not considered a big deal anymore that junior would already have an offer from LSU. Heck if you're not offered you're junior season you're an "unknown."

The amount of hype surrounding Booty relatively speaking to these days...combine McKnight, Nkimdche(sp?), and the excitement of Mett-siah all rolled into one.

He didn't play his senior year (HS). As a result, Dominick Davis,a near- contemporary probably made more national recruiting lists.

I know that's why I said he was until the injury. Not only did he have to sit out his senior year but he also a to redshirt as LSU because of the injury. I still remember Toefield making a few list as a top 12 or so running back despite sitting out his senior year. Most recruiting services had Davis as a defensive back.

Lawrence "Lump" Nixon bounced around at a few junior colleges due to a lack of grades. He never went any further than that and ended up getting in and out of trouble several times. I think he was even shot once.
His son played RB for Jennings a few years ago and actually rushed for over 1,000 yards. I believe his name is Davondrick Phillips.

I remember Tyronne Vaughn getting a pretty nice blurb in 82.. then he got shut down by a no name anonymous DB...

Booty was a way bigger recruit than Peyton. Everybody that ranked recruits back then had Booty #1 and Peyton was a top 10 QB that year.

This is where I usually get in trouble on this board

All I'm saying is I (as in me, H-Town Tiger) don't remember it that way and I admit it could be because of his last name and where I am from.

And I'm not saying Booty wasn't a big time recruit or #1 on at least some AA lists. I do remember everyone being really excited about getting him at LSU. But I remember them both being top 10 players and the top 2 QB's with both being #1 on some lists, I could be wrong about that, maybe Booty was #1 on everything, but unless proven other wise, I'm pretty sure Manning was at worst the #2 QB. He was recruited by Spurrier and I think Bill Walsh who was at Stanford besides Tenn of course. I don't remember who else was recruiting Booty, but I'm sure it was a similar list, in any event I heard more about Manning.

Had booty came to LSU out if HS there would have been a lot more hype than what it was when he came at 25 or however old he was

No I'm talking strictly when they were in HS. Fall 93, 94 signing class. Recruiting was just starting to get more publicity then (nothing like now of course). I just remember hearing more about Manning then that's all I'm saying. I remember me and my friends talking about where we thought he should go and we knew it wasn't LSU in part because we knew or thought LSU was getting Booty. I also remember being pissed when Booty was drafted by the Marlins and passed on LSU. I remember hoping he would be up when the Marlins played the Astros so I could boo him

Like Kevin Faulk I remember being major big time. Everyone saying we had to get him. DiNardo going straight from his first PC to recruit him. I just don't remember Booty being quite that big, apparently it's just me

Interesting, never heard that.

Now that you mention it though, I do remember him not being big on Manning coming out of Tennessee. I think he said he would take Andre Wadsworth over Manning or Leaf and then take Brian Griese in later rounds. Of course he also wanted to draft Steve Dils before he got stuck with Joe Montana, so what does he know

I remember seeing ECA play once when booty was there...and college coaches outnumbered eca fans

There weren't that many at Newman games....not even close....

And Newman games were a lot easier to get to

I'm not disputing the Booty was big time, as I said I recall them both being top top 10 and 1 and 1a as far as QB, I would need a little proof for something like this. however. Now Eli maybe wasn't as big a recruit. But I remember Peyton being up there, even if JB was bigger.

Though I do have to ask, if Booty was so much bigger than I'm remembering, why did he sign with LSU and Curley fricking Hallman ? Seriously was it just that he was all LSU or was it because he planned on signing with MLB if he was drafted high enough?

Looking at some of those HS All-American teams, didn't know Joe Mauer was that highly touted as a QB. Looks like he made the right decision.
