Tom Hanks isn't imo isn't even in the same league as all these other actors. Denzel, Pitt, and Leo, are many levels above him.
None of those three actors have performances any where near as good as what Hanks did in Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, or Cast Away.
Hanks' biggest strength is the subtlety of his performances. The big speeches he gave in films like Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan, and Cast Away are very human and don't seem contrived at all.

Saving Private Ryan
Cast Away

Wow. That right there is an impressive and diverse resume. I hadn't thought about Williams until you posted this.
You also forgot to add these notables:
The World According to Garp
Mrs. Doubtfire
Flubber
One Hour Photo (which was fantastic)

Serious question, not intentionally trolling, but has Kevin Costner ever made a good film?
Posted on 8/31/12 at 11:24 pm to Sublime
I only read the first page, but the answer is Keith David.

Who has been in the most commercially successful (yet quality) movies? Probably Tom Hanks.

Oh come on man. I'm not saying he belongs in with these acting greats, but the guy has made some decent movies, for crying out loud.

I like more of his older films:
Silverado
The Untouchables
No Way Out
Bull Durham
A Perfect World
Wyatt Earp
Tin Cup
Thirteen Days
I know a lot of people love Field of Dreams but it wasn't my favorite... I just never was able to make the leap and buy into the idea of the movie for some reason

I'm not saying anyone is wrong, I just generally don't care for him. Then again, somehow Bull Durham completely slipped my mind. I live in Durham, NC. How embarrassing

You are out of your mind. I know it isn't always the best barometer for an actor, but the man almost wont 3 straight Oscars for Best Actor.

Maybe now, but I don't know about when he was in his prime. He was pretty damn good.

Open Range is probably the best modern western.
And he directed it as well.
