I agree. Nice catch. And it makes me think it is Theon all the more.

However, I'm gonna stick with my guess: Mel wrote that letter.

The Pink Letter also mentions the wildling princess and her little prince.

Would Reek know of this?

If Stannis told him, yes.

I think it could've very well been a collaborative effort between Theon and Stannis. Stannis using Theon to set the tone as Ramsay would. Theon would gladly see Jon come to the rescue to take out the Boltons at this point.

It's one of those things that I'm really interested in seeing play out in tWoW.

Sorry to bring back an old topic but I just ran across this post from Belle, nice catch. This is precisely the type hint GRRM gives that the letter actually comes from Stannis or someone in Stannis' camp. Someone who heard Theon's statement, not Ramsey/Roose. Nice Catch

I just read that the other day and I think it is pretty conclusive evidence that Stannis wrote that letter.

However, what is it supposed to accomplish? To get Jon to send down reinforcements? It may be intended to do that, considering Theon told Stannis about how the only group of Stannis supporters between him and are full of green boys and old men, but there is no way that Jon would be able to get Nights watch/The Free People down in time to assist Stannis in the coming battle.

I was very confused by the Pink Letter. My first reaction was to take it at face value and believe that Stannis was dead, but after I reread it and thought about it, I realized that we never saw any battle in any of the POVs (one of which was in Stannis's camp). I think the Theon connection is a great find. I'm not quite sure what it hopes to accomplish, though. I really hope Stannis isn't dead yet, because that would be too depressing to see Stannis and Jon killed one after the other.

Stannis can't be dead, cause he's in the Theon chapter from WOW, right?

We don't know the timeline of that letter. It could have very well been sent AFTER the chapter we saw of TWOW

This is what tells me it is not Stannis. Firstly, it just isn't in Stannis' character to use deception to get Jon to bring an army. He would order Jon to bring down an army.

Secondly, part of Stannis' plan was to unite the northmen against Bolton. And he couldn't do this with a Wildling army, which is why he took the route that he did.

So, that kind of eliminates Theon, because he is in chains.

I think something is gonna blow his mind, and/or he realizes something, he bends his knee rallies his army in support and either dies an amazing badass death in battle or is head of a major house. i hope anyway. i like him

And from that preview chapter we know that Stannis is outnumbered, that a group of Northmen with him are traitors, and that the only allies he has between him and Frey/Manderly is full of green boys and old men.

That doesn't necessarily mean Stannis is dead or that he lost the upcoming battle because Manderly doesn't like Bolton and could very easily turn on the Freys and ally himself with Stannis. But the question then becomes does Stannis accept the fealty of "Sir to fat to sit a horse?"

I don't believe he is.

I think he will. He hates the Bolton's and he has his son back. There is nothing keeping him loyal any longer.

this, Stannis will accept his fealty and crush Bolton...or his head is on a pike above Winterfell.

The only part of this that I'm hesitant to buy into is Stannis not wanting to be deceptive. He's still the same guy who ordered Davos to row Melisandre to Storm's End and unleash her shadow baby. He's a survivor more then anything and will use any means necessary for that.

And I still think the Frey's will have a little surprise for them when they arrive. I don't think all is as it seems.

I think the Freys are fricked without Aenys. IMO, I think Manderly & Lady Ryswell wipe them out.
