Last year a buddy of mine got me hooked on duck hunting! This year I plan to do much more of it. So, what would you recommend for my first duck call?
Also, are there any instructional videos you would recommend to help me get started?
TIA

Get the Haydel's DR85. They have one that comes with a DVD or CD for like $20.

Primos Original Wench. If youre an OT baller, Primos Acrylic Wench (what i blow on)

Agree totally with the DR85. Also get a 6 in 1 whistle. Easy to learn.

My first call was an Echo Trash Talker. Good call for the price. It's around $20.

You also might wanna try the duck commander original. Easy to blow and sounds damn good. It's very raspy.

Been duck hunting for probably 25 years and all i have ever blown is a DR 85 and a Wingsetter Whistle 7in1. You will get Weigon, Mallard, Pintal, Teal, Wooducks all with the Wingsetter. I would get a Whistle first. Lock that up then move on to the Mallard Call but if your buddy can call then let him for the most part. Work on the soft quack and the feed call. These are the easiest and wont flare a duck as badly. The high ball is the hardest. Welcome to duck hunting buddy its as addictive as it comes

And a whistle as others have said. If this is only your second year hunting, you probably won't be locking ducks up with the mallard call. Stick to the whistle, and blow the mallard call in your spare time or late mornings when the hunt is all but done.
Don't be that jackass highballin' at the arse crack of dawn. The neighboring blind next to us last year had that guy. We were thankful for the ducks he sent our way.

Same exact situation with us last season. About 6 guys with whistles acting like jackasses and sky blasting every morning. They're hunting somewhere else this year.

Thanks for all of the advice! I plan on letting the experienced guys do most of the calling, and learning from them when they are willing to help.
Last year a visitor came with somebody on the lease and he was TERRIBLE! As soon as a member of the lease would call a group in, jackass would start calling and scare them off. He was told to stop calling three times.......when he called again the guy who told him to stop grabbed the call out of his hand and threw it as far as he could in to the flooded rice field! LMAO

My mentor called that a "pitch" adjustment.

either the DR 85 or the primos original wench is what I have been told. I bought both last year and need to learn how to call.

Not 100% sure yet. When it cools off some I'm gonna go scout Joyce WMA and Maurepas WMA. Have a couple of friends on a lease in the SW LA rice fields that I get to go with a few times when invited.
Where are you hunting?

My buddies lease is south of I-10 between Lake Charles and Bell City. Are you in that area?
