I never weighed it, but a 2 hour hike on a warm day is very doable.

If you have to bug out. 2 hours may not get you far.

You're right. My plan is to assess right before how far I would have to go and lighten to that level. In many bugout scenarios you may be doing all your bugging in a vehicle. No need to lighten up there.

Good pack. Any good tips on fire starter kits. I got my kids the Bear Gyrillis one. Seams to work good enough. Dryer lint starts instantly.

I'm working on that too. Thinking of some kind of steel & flint. Will check Cabela's and Cheaper than Dirt.

One thing that I've added to mine (that I think is a great addition) is a Benjamin Pump Air Rifle. You can carry tons of ammo in a very compact space. This rifle will kill just about any small game, saving valuable rifle ammo for other situations.

The wife and I have been working on ours. Gonna try them out one long weekend during hunting season. Just gonna grab the bags and go for four days. Gonna start doing this a few weekends a year. I figure it's the best way to test your bag. We have Cipro, flagyl and antibiotic oint in ours. Haven't seen meds mentioned. May add some anti diarrheals and pain meds. Trying to get the essentials without too much bulk.

So I saw this thread and became motivated to finish up my bug out bag. I had about 80% of my items for over a year now and used the info on the first page to add more items. Heck, December 21, 2012 is just around the corner. It’s game time. This is everything. Medic: Sawyer snake kit. I bought two first aid kids and I made one myself. My kit has the following: tweezers, hand sanitizer, 4-0 Ethicon suture with sewing needle, clotting sponge, gauze pads, rolled gauze, coban, ace wrap, Vitamins, Neosporin, Aspirin, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Diarrhea pills, Cefazolin (antibiotic). Weather: Sunscreen and Off Waterproof pants and waterproof jacket with hood. Mosquito jacket with shield hood for head. An absolute must for me. Mosquito’s love me for some reason. Eureka single tent. Sorry ladies, I’m sleeping alone. Small fleece blanket. Sol Emergency Bivvy (blanket). Another Emergency blanket and a whistle. Water proof bag for socks, underwear, 1 LSU shirt for moral purposes. Food: My weakest area. 4 mountain house packs 2 power bars Pot with lid, cup, spork, small knife. I found some emergency survival power bars online. Each bar has 2400 calories. I’m going to order 5. So that will stretch my food supply out another 5 days. Water: Katadyn Base Camp water filters system with an extra filter. Very simple. Just fill the bag with water and hang it up. Water runs through filter. Bota bag. Platypus water bladder X 2. Holds 1 liter. They take up almost no space empty. When my fancy water system runs down I have the old fashion water purification tablets. Tools: 50 ft. rope. Multipurpose tool. Spool of 50 lb fishing line. Flash light. Squeeze the handle to charge it. Fire starter with magnesium rod. 3 Bic lighters Hatchet and Knife combo String Duct tape This is my Kelty camping bag. Above it is a water bottle and a waterproof bag cover. Below it is a fanny pack. Several minutes later and after a few cuss words I manage to cram all of this junk into the bag. Guns and Ammo: I’m bringing a 12 gauge shot gun and a 357 revolver (my only hand gun). I stuff the fanny pack full of shotgun shells (buck, slugs, and bird shot), 357, and 38 special + P. Total Ammo= 80 rounds of 12 gauge and 45 rounds of 357 Now it’s time for the fun part. Weighing time. So I strap on my bug out bag (no guns or ammo) and jump onto the scales. I am +20 lbs. Kind of surprised. I figured it would weight more. I reweigh (without bug out bag) with my loaded revolver in holster, 12 gauge gun fully loaded, and the rest of my ammo I’m bringing on the trip. I am now +21 lbs. Guns and Ammo are freaking HEAVY. 12 gauge shot gun shells take up a lot of room. Bug out bag= 20 lbs Guns and Ammo= 21 lbs A total of 41 lbs of gear. Thoughts: 1. I might need to reconsider my gun choices. 2. I’m ready for the end of the world or a camping trip. Whichever comes first. 3. I kinda wish I had my money back on half of this crap.

bump. I read through most of this but never saw anything about a hammock. I have an Eagles Nest Outfitters hammock. These things can easily hold two people. It's the quickest, easiest way to set up camp. Throw a tarp over it to keep dry. They are also light weight - you can tie it onto the back of your pack. LINK

What about something to pick locks with? In a real bad lengthy situation you would eventually need more supplies which may be behind locked doors. You could shoot the locks but that would use precious ammo, plus it would make noise and attract people/zombies/aliens.
