re: Saw Moonrise Kingdom

I did not think Life Aquatic was funny. I have not seen "Moonrise Kingdom" yet, but my parents liked it.

It was an interesting movie, but it was far from Anderson's best work, imo. Also, I sort of felt like a pedophile for watching it at one point.

Life Aquatic is his best movie , don't care what anyone else says. Bill Murray KILLED it in that role.

this was by far my least favorite anderson movie, and i was very disappointed leaving the theater.

stylistically, he's become a parody of himself, starting with Life Aquatic. its gotten to point now where his movies are so sterile there's very little life in them. and, for me, it feels like this rigid visual style has extended to his dialogue, which really bothers me. the lines are so forced to maintain his signature "quirk" that it loses anything relatable. his first three felt very genuine and honest, and ever since he's become a kind of warhol filmmaker: all style no substance.

he needs owen wilson back bad. this roman coppola collaboration isnt doing it for me.

I can't disagree more. I think its his best work since Rushmore and Tennenbaums, and on that level.

Have you seen Rushmore? I don't even generally like Anderson and Rushmore is one of my favorite all-time movies. I really liked Life Aquatic too. Definitely my second favorite Anderson flick. Moonrise kingdom probably a more distant third. And I've never seen another Anderson movie I would say I liked, although I've heard bottle rocket is really good.

The very disturbing child romance underwear aspect ruined any chance I had of liking it. I was borderline trying to enjoy it until that point.

I enjoyed it and it's probably my favorite WA film, though I've only seen this, Life Aquatic, and Royal Tenebaums which I both enjoyed. Been trying to see Bottle Rocket and Rushmore for the longest time but haven't been able to yet.

It's tough to be a director with such a distinct style because even if you aren't trying to you can be seem to be trying too hard to play into that style when in reality you're just directing the way you have always directed.

I'm not trying to call out anyone in this thread, just saying what could be happening, or it could be that he knows he found success with his style early on so he actually has been relying on it too much like some of you say.

This was literally the only scene I found funny.

Sure it does. You can learn to appreciate their sense of humor.

ive been a WA fan since bottle rocket was released on home video. his whole career has been one long exercise in style refinement that seems to have crescendoed in Moonrise Kingdom.

but it's gotten to the point where his style is overpowering the stories and characters, creating a wall of extra separation between the viewer and whatever emotion he is wanting to make you feel, which, to me, is the whole point of filmmaking: making the audience experience and feel something. some of you may have had this experience with Moonrise, but i honestly have no idea how someone who has seen all of his work can feel this is one of his better movies.

scorsese flirted with this, but never fell victim to it like anderson has. i personally feel he has lost that spark he had when he was moving up the ladder, something that scorsese never lost, even in his worst coke days.

by contrast, PT Anderson was also criticized for being too style heavy, and his films after Punch Drunk Love show a decided effort to mitigate that trend, which led to some very fresh and unexpected films.

I dont see Wes surprising anyone anymore, and i really fear this next hotel movie or whatever it is will be a disaster.

Unless you have a love/hate relationship with Anderson:

Rushmore followed by Royal T. are two of my favorite movies of any director.

But I disliked Life Aquatic and Darjeeling to the point of disavow that Anderson made them.

I have a suspicion this movie will fall in the later category or somewhere in between.

I really liked the Life Aquatic. I hated Darjeeling though.

I agree with the other poster that the underwear dancing scene was awkward and not really needed, but I really enjoyed the film.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as his other stuff.

my favorite bill murray role, aside from big ern

i really liked moonrise. i liked the story, i liked the characters (especially the secondary scouts) the visuals, dialogue, everything. i also love everything WA has done, so perhaps i am biased.
