What's the cheapest, but usable smoker around?

I usually just rig up my gas grill with some wood chips and water pan, but I'm thinking I'd like to use an actual smoker next time.
I'm not going to buy a BGE and I'd like something less expensive than the weber oyster deal. Can I get by with just a cheap Brinkman? Or do I need to just get the Weber?

Masterbuilt electric is less than 200 bucks at lowes or home depot
The lowes one I got has a digital screen and built in meat probe, like it a lot

Just a tip: save yourself some time and money and switch to wood chunks.
I brought an 80 dollar stand up electric smoker. I know I know. I'm on a budget though. Anyway, I wound up taking out the electric coil and turning it into a charcoal smoker.
It works great. No, it's not the sturdiest or have the best air flow, but I can smoke some of the best smoke pork I've ever eaten on it.

A cheap smoker that doesn't seal well and therefore doesn't hold temperature well will drive you crazy and make you curse the day you bought it.
Weber Smokey Mountain is under $300 and worth every penny. Loaded correctly, it will hold temp for 8-10 hours. I set mine at night, monitor for the first hour until the temp settles out then go to bed.
Can't beat it for the money.

The $39 Brinkman from Home Depot works just fine...but you will need a thermometer, as the one that comes with it only says Warm and Hot. Other than that, it's great. Won grand champion in the backyard division of the first competition I ever entered...and it was with that smoker.
