re: Times-Picayune: Confirmed candidates: Jones, Theus, Amaker

quote:

Amaker has done alright at Harvard, but his record of getting Seton Hall and Michigan to the NCAA tourney was abysmal: 10 years with SH and UM and only 1 NCAA tourney.
To be fair, he would have made it two more times if Michigan wasn't under probation in his 2nd and 3rd year.

To balance that out, his team at Harvard was ranked in the top 25 with ZERO athletic scholarship athletes this past year. And that was after Jeremy Lin had his run.

Out of the candidates, I would take a flier on Amaker for a 4 year contract. He is a current winner and lost early in his coaching career which started way too soon (I believe one of the youngest head coaches in D1). He has shown signs of having gained experience while not falling into any bad habits.

TA wouldn't be in my top 3, but I could live with the call..think he has an higher ceiling than some others mentioned thus far.

Amaker would be the best choice

You giving that credit to Jones instead of Dale Brown? Didn't Dale run into Shaq at like 13 years old or something like that?

We should just put the permaban on stickying any future Times-Pic articles after their "sources" of the Dixon stuff are so strong that they don't name them and take the story down immediately. We'd be better off just stickying a thread from a random rantard at this point.

Yes, Dale met him at 13 in Germany. Kept in touch through the years. And LSU had Chris Jackson already here, plus inked Stanley Roberts and his coach Childers. And at the time Dale was abusing Penders and Texas yearly in head-to-head games..thus, LSU was in great shape to get Shaq outta SA Cole.

Don't know Shaq's shortlist at the time, but I'd imagine he more interest in schools like Tark's UNLV than K's Duke,etc..maybe had interest in UNC or Mich?

Um, so, guys...not to bash T/P here, but did they also frick up by putting Theus' name in that article as well?

Rabalais' new article mentions nothing of him...and he's actually quoting Alleva.

Can we please get Randy Livingston on as an assistant and recruiter, whoever we hire for HC.

No. He's not.

Chris Jackson, and Randy Livingston

Jackson maybe. Livingston was probably coming to LSU no matter who coached.

quote:

Back in those days the PMAC was rockin'

Back in the days when Dale Brown was still running things, the PMAC was rockin'. When Dale went into semi-retirement and let Jones run the program, we got the last four or five years of the "Dale Brown" era (i.e. losing seasons and probation).

quote:

he has done a DECENT job at UNT. Took them to a few NCAA tournaments. Imagine what he could do here

Presumably less than he was able to do at a mid-major in a shitty conference with no real competition. And "decent" is now the standard for us? What is it with these so-called LSU fans who seem actually to WANT to fail?

quote:

he is an excellent recruiter

He did a great job with Lester Earl.

quote:

It would be a heartwarming story as he would be able to redeem himself

WINNING warms my heart, not some assistant coach from 15 years ago redeeming himself for getting us on probation.

quote:

Allegations were never proven against him and Dale. After 15 years, the sanctions thing should finally have blown over

It would have if we had hired good coaches since then. It never will if we bring back one of the main players in that whole fiasco.

quote:

He has not been in any trouble since leaving LSU

Neither have I. Give me a couple million a year and let me fail to rebuild the basketball program.

quote:

He would definitely be on MY top 5 list of possible coaching candidates.

Based on what? Winning 56% of his games at a fricking Sun Belt school? His record at UNT is 190-146 (.565) overall and 91-88 (.508) in Sun Belt Conference play.

In his first six seasons as a head coach (1 at Memphis, 5 at North Texas), he had ONE winning season...a 15-14 campaign in his first season at UNT. After following that up with 7-21, 13-15, 14-14 and 14-14 performances in his next four years, he went on this so-called tear that has everyone so excited about him...

He's just finished a six-year stretch in which he's gone 23-11, 20-11, 20-12, 24-9, 22-11 and 18-14, a combined six-year record of 127-68 (.651), with two NCAA tournament appearances. In the 24-9 season, he managed to finish first in his division of the Sun Belt, the closest he's come to a conference championship in his 12 seasons as a head coach, 11 in one of the weakest conferences in basketball. And remember, this is the amazing hot streak that has everybody atwitter about him. His full record is 205-162 (.559) overall and 98-97 (.503) in conference.

A barely over .500 coach in one of the worst conferences in basketball is generating this kind of excitement? Why? There is no possible reason for this except one...the good ole boys who ruined LSU football for decades want to keep doing it in basketball.
