honestly very few, saw some birds, couldnt name them, but they were not something i would see in the city.
but at night, when we were in the tent, the animal sounds we heard were amazing. stuff you can only hear in the wild

so we are thinking of doing another hike when we get the chance, but we wont be able to go for as long next time, what size pack would you suggest for a 2 day hike if we will be splitting the gear between two people?
i currently have the northface crestone 60
but even on our 4 day hike i felt like i didnt need a pack that big.

during the day it couldn't have gotten more than 80 degrees, at night in the mid-high 40's id say... the weather could not have been better, absolutely perfect

How much detail goes into clothing?
what did you start out wearing or bringing with you?
what do you find most comfortable in good weather? cold weather?
do you typically have any extra clothes in your pack?
do you buy clothes along the way?
This thread got me interested, but I know little about the AT outside of these 22 pages.

I was looking at the osprey exos 48 for my first pack. With the right gear I could do a three to four day. Especially in warm weather when not carrying extra warm clothing.

can't remember if I posted in here or not, but back a couple weeks ago the wife and I went to Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyon for a little hiking. We ended up with some easy day hiking of around 7 miles a day. We stayed at Palo Duro in the cabins they have on the rim of the canyon, which were great views for having coffee and watching the sun rise and having a beer and watching it set (first pic is view from cabin). I highly recommend these parks if you are in West Texas/ the Texas Panhandle

More than a little but not a lot. Depends on the weather you will be encoutering and how fancy you want/need to be. ***COTTON IS A NO NO AT ALL TIMES***
What do you find most comfortable in good weather?
For me, I'll wear some columbia fishing shorts I have and a nike dri fit tshirt.
Cold weather?
Depends if it's raining or snowing or both. If raining and cold, I'll wear my columbia convertible pants with wool underwear underneath. If pouring, just the pants and my rain pants over them. I typically wear a nike dri fit tshirt or long sleeve shirt depending on much I'm working and a raincoat. Dealing with snow, my columbia convertible pants or snow pants along with wool underwear depending on the temp. Nike drifit long sleeve or wool top and a drifit tshirt and either my raincoat or my cold weather hiking jacket depending on how much I'm working or not at all if it isn't snowing until I need it. I wear wool socks no matter the situation.
Do you typically have extra clothes in your pack?
Yes, but if I'm going out for an extended period of time I would pare down what I bring and will be prepared to be dirtier than normal.

You would have no problem with that pack doing 3-4 days. That's a nice pack. Enjoy it.
I received my new climbing pack last week. Black Diamond Axis 33 and I could do two nights in that thing since all my gear is light weight and small. It's only a day pack but that thing is much larger than I anticipated which is awesome. Love that thing. The lumbar on it along with the shoulder straps move with your body so you aren't constricted whatsoever. Can't wait to try it out.

check out REI adventure shorts. Good length, dry quickly, very comfortable and light
and like has been mentioned, NO COTTON. Wear a t-shirt of performance material, like Underarmour or something similar
for a week, I usually only pack one change of shorts and t-shirt, and a couple changes in underwear and socks. Dry socks are very important, so I'd often change them during the day, hanging them out to dry. If you get particularly dirty, wash your clothes with creek/river water somewhere along the trail, but try not to get soap in the stream.
I'd bring an underarmour hoody that is light, fast drying and warm even when wet. If I got too cold for that to be enough I'd get in my sleeping bag.
if you go during the summer, you may just want a lightweight long sleeve shirt rather than a sweatshirt to just knock out the chill.
dont forget camp shoes. No matter how great my hiking boots, it's always good to take them off around camp

Nothing extra except for one pair of socks. One sock was a camera cover and one sock was a sunglasses case. However, I was counting ounces and if going on a 3 day trip I would have brought extra gear.quote:

Nope. I'm picky about gear and do everything online.
Never wear cotton and don't underestimate the power of wool in any climate. I'd look into icebreaker or ibex for nice boxers or patagonia for something cheaper. I'd look into Darn Tough Vermont (lifetime guarantee) socks (or icebreaker, smartwool).
Remember LIGHT COLORS! Ticks are attracted to darker clothing.
