Somehow through my years in New Orleans, I've never made it to Jacques-Imo's and I'm going for the first time tonight. What are some of the "go to" dishes I should consider ordering?

I had dinner with the band "Fishbone" one night 10 years ago and everyone was satisfied with what they ordered. I would say order what you like and you should have no problem. Ol' Jacques kept coming outside to check on us and each time he had a new glass of wine. It was a good time.

Personally, I'd "go to" another restaurant. Most overrated restaursnt in the city.

Thanks for your positive and relevant contribution to the question.

I swear, some of you get your kicks from being pessimistic and critical about everything. I'd imagine if someone asked you what your plans are for a gorgeous sunny day, your response would include how it would probably rain tomorrow.

How about saying "I think the restaurant is overrated but I've had this dish and it wasn't too bad."? There's no way in hell that the place doesn't have one good item on the menu.

The alligator sausage cheesecake for appetizer is legit.

Pretty good food, been several times, never had anything bad.

Went one time when I was in town visiting on a Monday night...was planning to see Papa Grows Funk at the Leaf. There was a bad storm that night so the show got cancelled and I went to Jacques anyway. Wasn't anyone in the place except for me and one other customer. Jacque sat down and talked for awhile. Started having the bartender pour us shots of Chartreuse...man that stuff is bad. Good time though.

The portions are very big and the food is really rich. What ever hits you go for it. The alligator sausage and crawfish cheese cake gets a lot of pub.

Jaques Imo's is totally legit. It may be my favorite restaurant in New Orleans. The blackened redfish is awesome. Also you have to try the shrimp and alligator sausage cheese cake, it's definitely a "go to item" on the menu. The stuffed pork chop and the blackened sirloin of lamb are also "go to" items! Enjoy!!

This is probably true.

It's still a decent place, though, and probably worth a visit if you haven't been. Never had a bad meal there, it just comes with a lot of hassle.

Every meal also starts out with a warm spinach salad topped with a delicious fried oyster and a cornbread muffin drizzled with garlic butter sauce. (It's been about a year since i've been there i hope they're still doing this)

I apologize NDA but will agree with the Board on the alligator sausage cheesecake for appetizer.

Having spent alot of time in the "low country" of SC and GA, Jacques-Imos just really does not add up. I do not understand the consistent praise. One man's opinion...

I'll second Pangloss's rec that you go elsewhere.

Well unless you feel like reliving your days as a pledge in a fraternity. Hazing, waiting, loud, and being forced to eat bad food.

But hey, it is fun, right?

The most fun you'll never want to have again, but i'd say its worth the experience.

I went a few weeks ago & had the "Godzilla over fried green tomatoes." It's a soft shell crab on top of the tomatoes. I definitely enjoyed it.

Screw the haters, the place is great. If you don;t like the specials get the pork chop.

It gets packed so get there early. You can get on the wait list and go grab a few drinks at maple leaf next door. I used to hit up Maple leaf alot when I lived there so we would go here alot before the show. I never had anything bad, but portions are large. Me and g/f would split an entree and get a few apps.
